Description

This is almost certainly the last we'll see of this wine. Balgownie Vineyard, one of the real icons of Victorian Cabernet, has been sold to property developers, and Josh Cooper reckons 2025 will be his final vintage off its original 1970 plantings in Maiden Gully, Bendigo.

Josh is one of the most exciting young winemakers in the country, and Cabernet is where his heart lies. He's spent more than a decade collecting old Balgownie bottles, so getting a parcel of these vines through winemaker Tony Winspear meant a lot. The vines sit near Myers Creek on Ordovician shale, quartz and ironstone rubble, and at this age the fruit comes in with serious concentration.

The winemaking is hands-on and simple. Hand-picked, destemmed, partly foot crushed and left to start fermenting on its own in open vats for three weeks, then basket pressed and given 12 months in barrel (30% new Stockinger 300L, the rest seasoned Bordeaux barriques). Only 375 dozen were made.

Josh calls it the most age-worthy vintage yet from the site, with a bit more depth and structure than the brilliant 2024. Think cassis, graphite, violet and cedar, a savoury, almost briny edge and fine, gritty tannins that carry a long, perfumed finish. Give it a good decant and pour it with a slow-roasted lamb shoulder, or tuck a few away for the long haul.

A final chapter from a legendary vineyard, made by a Cabernet-obsessed winemaker at the top of his game. Not one to miss.

"This could be the last we see of this wine and site? Maybe. It’s a substantial and quietly powerful wine... There’s a distinct kind of old school, good school feel here, perhaps pushed through a modern lens"

95 points - "This could be the last we see of this wine and site? Maybe. It’s a substantial and quietly powerful wine. Massive inward concentration, inky texture, grippy, silty tannin in a web shaping things, huge perfume of wild berries and mint and chocolate and sooty spice. The palate, a delight, a flowing, sleek thing of darkness, woody spice and savoury things. Dustiness here in a good way. There’s a distinct kind of old school, good school feel here, perhaps pushed through a modern lens, but leaning into more laid back, wine-for-cellaring vibes. And yet, the finesse seeps into things and convinces you to drink now. Compelling." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Tasting Note
Deep, inky garnet. A wine which immediately makes one sit up and focus. An extra layer of depth and structure this year, yet still refined and complex with graphite, sweet cassis, cedar spice, violet and rose, air reveals infinite nuance and detail and a briny, nori like complexity. The palate is flooded with fine emery tannnins and wave upon wave of dark Cabernet fruit, finishing with coal, sweet violet and cassis, and a wave of perfume.

The most age-worthy vintage yet for us from this wonderful site and a wine that displays my most prized characteristics - effortless complexity and power without weight. Please decant well prior to drinking, or cellar for as long as you like.

A high note to go out on.

Vineyard
Balgownie Vineyard is a name that should need no introduction to lovers of Victorian wine. An icon of the 70s and 80s, it has produced some of the most remarkable mature Australian wines I have had the pleasure of drinking. Indeed, my cellar is well stocked with them thanks to 10+ years of collecting.

Established in 1969 at 200m ASL near the banks of Myers Creek in Maiden Gully on Ordovician shale, quartz and ironstone rubble, thanks to winemaker Tony Winspear it has supplied us a small amount of old vine Cabernet Sauvignon from some of the earliest plantings from 1970. These old vines and special place deliver fruit of extreme concentration and complexity.

Following its sale to property developers, it's with tremendous sadness that this will almost certainly be our final vintage of wine made from Balgownie, a site rich with significance to the industry as a whole, and to us on a personal level. We trust this final release will be a fitting celebration of this special vineyard and everything it has represented over the last six decades.

Winemaking
Once hand-harvested, the fruit was entirely de-stemmed, then partially foot crushed before transfer to open fermenters where it remained for three weeks. The must was allowed to soak until natural fermentation commenced and was then extracted with a combination pumping over, delestage and pigage before basket pressing.

Elevage took place in a combination of new Stockinger 300L (30%) and seasoned thin staved Bordeaux coopered barriques for 12 months, before four months in stainless steal after assemblage.

Joshua Cooper

Joshua Cooper is the son of Nelly and Allan Cooper, the founders of the acclaimed Cobaw Ridge winery in the Macedon Ranges.

Born and raised on the top-tier cool climate wines of his family, Josh's wines have a delicacy and unforced feel to them. As you might imagine, growing up in the Macedon Ranges, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are two varieties he particularly excels with, as too is his great love, which is Cabernet. He sources his fruit from a series of growers across central Victoria who farm with a like-minded philosophy of organic farming and sustainability, with plans to plant his own vineyard in Macedon in the future.

Josh makes only a small amount of each wine and they are in high demand from those who want to get in early on the next generation of Cooper. He is undoubtedly one of the country's most exciting and acclaimed young winemakers, being named James Halliday's Best New Winery for 2024 as well as the winner of Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine’s Young Winemaker of the Year 2020.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
