Description

Ken Helm has spent most of his life proving just how good Riesling can be in the Canberra District, and his Premium bottling is the clearest expression of that vision. The fruit comes from old vines in Murrumbateman – vineyards Ken has worked with for decades – and the style is all about purity and precision.

Winemaking here is deliberately simple. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented cool in stainless steel, with nothing added to distract from what the vineyard gives. 2025 was a strong season, the kind of year that allowed slow ripening and plenty of flavour development while keeping natural acidity in check.

The result is a Riesling that’s bright and lively now but will quietly build complexity as it ages, just like so many Helm wines before it. It’s a bottle that speaks as much to Ken’s legacy as it does to the season – proof of why he’s long been regarded as one of Australia’s great champions of Riesling.

A pristine, utterly delicious wine that charms at first sip. A light flutter of lemon blossom and jasmine, fennel, too, and tasting of lemon barley water, ginger and citrus – especially limes. It’s refreshingly dry yet there’s some palate weight as it’s not all driven by acidity; there’s flavour, depth and a slip of texture. Finishes long and satisfying.

This is wow factor stuff. Potent and inwardly concentrated, lemon-lime essence, green apple, a lick of ginger tea, some faint honeyed notes, though the wine feels decidedly dry. Bold flavours, so much character, a faint wild honey note providing apparent sweetness but also that wild honey bitterness. It sizzles with its energy, mops the palate clean after each sip and yet lingers with sweet spice and preserved lemon characters. Striking wine. Sensational.

    Impressive purity and drive

Fruit purity here is startling at 11% abv. Vibrant perfume to start, so striking, all your citrus high notes, some ginger too. On the palate a gamut of lemon, lime, some orange/mandarin and oodles of minerality. Spice and preserved lemon too. Up there with best young Australian Rieslings I've tried to date. Long finish (15+ sec) clinches it with gentle but persistent phenolic grip. High acidity but a gentle roundness on the palate keeps it from being harsh. Would happily revisit.

    Delicious

After visiting Murrumbateman shortly before lockdown, I decided to buy another bottle of Helm's 2021 Premium Riesling. Could do with a bit more age on it but still a top draw Riesling and delicious. Acidic yet complex. Ken Helm never disappoints.

The Grapes
The 2024/25 was a standout vintage and produced some of our best wines in 50 years. It started with warm, dry conditions with heavy morning frosts. Dry cool nights, warm days with storms, continued through to harvest, which started in early March. Riesling excelled with incredible flavours, crisp acid and perfectly balanced palate. Yields were above average. A Riesling year to remember.

The Wine
Since 2004 this style has collected 14 trophies at regional and capital city wine shows, and rave reviews from Australia’s most respected wine critics. It’s the go to wine for a classic Canberra Riesling. The fruit was sourced for this vintage from the Lustenberger vineyard with the Riesling GM198 clone. This premium Riesling is a terroir wine from one of Helm Wines’ two premium vineyards.
