Description

If Polish Hill is Grosset’s steely, tightly wound Riesling, then Springvale is its more open and generous sibling but no less serious. Sourced from Grosset’s certified organic and biodynamic vineyard at Watervale, Springvale shows why this subregion remains one of the great homes of Australian Riesling.

The site itself is unusual for Watervale: thin red loam over limestone, underpinned by slate bedrock. That geology, combined with meticulous farming, consistently produces fruit with clarity, lift, and a touch more approachability than Polish Hill. In 2025, a warm, early season was kept in check by Grosset’s biodynamic practices, which helped the vines hold their balance and deliver pristine fruit.

The wine is immediately expressive - lemon and lime zest leap from the glass, with floral edges and just a flicker of fennel. The palate has that signature Watervale juiciness, layered with citrus oil, chalky minerality and a taut, dry finish. It’s mouthwatering and refreshing now, yet with the depth and structure to reward 10–12 years in the cellar.

For many collectors, Springvale is the perfect counterpoint to Polish Hill: equally precise, but with softer fruit and a little more generosity upfront. If Polish Hill is the brooding intellectual, Springvale is the open-armed charmer – and we love having both side by side each vintage. The 2025 is a classic Grosset release, showing why Jeffrey Grosset remains Australia’s master of Riesling.

"This wine is only a few months old but already, it offers a lot. It will get better... This is textbook in the best of ways."

This was tasted in the full vigour of its youth, and yet there's an approachability and ease of drinking here. This has lemon-lime fruit as an underpinning, green apple crunch, a talc and brine-like mineral combination, some green herbs and a dash of tonic water, too. It's compact and yet holds a juiciness at its core; the big reveal is just how much flavour is packed in here. There's a wet river pebble feel to texture. Very classic in its feel; a class act.

You get flashy aromatics, mid-palate fruit flesh and intensity, and a penetrating drive of flavour through the finish. This wine is only a few months old but already, it offers a lot. It will get better. Lime juice, grapefruit, citrus peel, a keen Riverstone character and exquisite length. This is textbook in the best of ways.

Bright aromas of grapefruit, lemon peel, white flowers, wet slate and lime cordial. The palate is fine and racy, with bright acidity and a mineral-edged finish that persists into a long, pure and mouthwatering close. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The Real Review 95 Points

Very light green-yellow colour; intense and lifted fragrance of lime leaf and lemon blossom, with a creamy pastry/yeasty overtone. The wine is likewise bright and very youthful in the mouth, concentrated, with cleansing acidity, good fruit intensity and persistence, with a hint of mid-palate richness which sets it apart. A precision wine that really sings on the tongue. 18 Jul 2025

The 2025 Springvale Riesling is taut and thrumming aromatically: notes of lemon zest, talc, scratched soapstone and white flowers predominate. In the mouth, the wine is fleshy in its fruit profile yet austere in its acid attack, and together, these make for an awkward pairing in youth. Like a successful arranged marriage, these two extremes will eventually unite, bringing together the best of the warm days and the cold nights that were experienced early in the growing season. There was a significant frost in September of 2024 that damaged some fruit set and vineyards early in the season. Not all vineyards were affected, but it was a bitter blow for those that were, having experienced a similarly damaging frost the spring prior. The 2025 season rolled out with extremely dry conditions, which was felt right across the South Australian state. For those who were able to coax and manage their vineyards through these challenging conditions, the wines are fantastic and, like this Springvale Riesling, will show themselves to be excellent in years to come. I'd be inclined to allow this a year or so of grace in the cellar prior to embarking. 12.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

    Elegant and affordable.

Grosset’s Springvale Riesling is one of Grosset’s riesling triumvirs. The Alea is delightful and finishes with a touch of residual sweetness. The Polish hill is a smashing riesling, but with a bigger price tag. The Springvale is equally enjoyable with out the expense. Great with oysters.

    Top Clare Riesling

Underrated and great value Grosset Riesling.

The 2025 Grosset Springvale Riesling showcases lively intensity with quintessential Clare Valley character – pure lemon-lime aromatics that fill the mid-palate with remarkable depth and power. Mouth-puckering and bone-dry, this wine delivers fine structure and a lingering, sumptuous finish that speaks to the quality of fruit achieved. Despite a warm, dry and early season, biodynamic farming and holistic vineyard management created almost oasis-like conditions at Springvale. This careful stewardship delivered pristine, flavoursome grapes from the vineyard’s distinctive red loam-over-limestone and slate soils. The result perfectly balances the site’s natural generosity with crystalline purity, demonstrating how sustainable viticulture can triumph over challenging vintage conditions to produce exceptional Clare Valley Riesling.
