Description

The Giant Steps team, led by Mel Chester, treat this with the same rigour as their single-vineyard icons. It's a rose purpose-built from the ground up, sourced specifically from the premium Sexton and Tarraford vineyards, sites that would normally be destined for much more premium (in dollar-amount) wines.

The typical Giant Steps class is in the details. It’s a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Syrah, hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed. Crucially, they only use the "free run" juice - the first, purest flow from the press - discarding the coarser pressings that lesser Rosés rely on for volume. That sacrifice is what gives the wine its delightful clarity and silkiness.

The 2025 vintage was warm and dry, delivering fruit with natural concentration, but that gentle handling has kept it fresh and crucnhy. It is pale, dry and exceedingly fragrant, balancing the pretty aromatics of the Pinot with the structural spine of the Syrah. This is serious winemaking masquerading as a smashable summer drink.

    A Perfect Summer Rose

Long summer afternoons on the back verandah - you're in the shade, kids in the pool. A well balanced grazing table before you - only one thing missing...

Great Rose that actually tastes like Rose should.

Guests of mine claimed that this actually tastes "like Rose should taste..." with quality of fruit, depth of flavour and supported with loing length of taste overall.

    Giant Steps Rosé

    Classics entry level GS quality.

The 2025 harvest season started with above average rainfall over winter leading to good soil moisture heading into spring. Throughout spring we experienced warm and dry conditions presenting the vineyard with early shoot development and minimal disease pressure during flowering. As a result of the high soil moisture during the proceeding winter vine canopy health was strong. The warm and dry conditions continued throughout summer leading to an earlier than average start to harvest, whilst being quite a compressed harvest the low disease pressure and above average rainfall early in the season has led to wines with great acidity, balance and flavour and longevity.

Giant Steps Rosé is inspired by the wines of Provence with the perfume and beauty of early-picked Yarra Valley Pinot Noir and Syrah. Hand-picked and gently pressed, the combination creates a Rosé that is deliciously refreshing.
food matching

Drink by itself while sitting in the sun. Drink it out of enamel cups at the beach with salty piping hot fish and chips. Crab sangas on white bread with mayo and dill. A Thai feast of satay chicken, with steamed rice and a zippy, spicy papaya salad. Grilled anchovies on toasted bruschetta with tomatoes.
vinification

Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed taking only the fresh free run. The clear juice was then racked to a stainless-steel tank for a long cool ferment before being matured on ferment lees until bottling in June.

Giant Steps

Giant Steps is a premium Yarra Valley outfit founded by Phil Sexton and located in the township of Healesville. Beginning with the vision of original head winemaker Steve Flamsteed, Giant Steps developed an international reputation for producing some of Australia's finest examples of single vineyard Pinot Noir & Chardonnay.

In 2021 the exceptionally talented Melanie Chester joined the team as the new head of winemaking and viticulture, marking an exciting new chapter in this elite producer's story.

Every aspect of the Giant Steps process is geared towards making truly world-class wines from the vineyard to the final bottled wine. The focus is on what the Yarra does best - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz/Syrah and Bordeaux-variety blends - and showcasing the unique terroirs of some of the region's finest vineyards.
