Description

Scary Gully is one of the highest and oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, and it earns its name. Planted in 1984 at 620 metres up in Forest Range, the vines cling to a steep ridge of sandstone and quartz that makes farming hard work, especially in a wet year.

Gareth Belton and the Gentle Folk crew have become one of the Hills' most respected small producers, known for organic thinking, a light hand in the winery and wines with real personality. Scary Gully is a special one in their lineup. It's an old mix of MV6, D5V12, GM8 and Pommard clones on southeast and southwest slopes, and it gives a Pinot with genuine altitude and a stony edge.

Expect what this site does so well: lifted perfume, red and dark cherry, a bit of spice and that foresty, earthy wildness that marks every Scary Gully release. It's light on its feet, with fine tannins and a long, mineral finish. A little plumper this year than the lighter 2023 or 2024 versions but delicious nonetheless.

Old vines, a scary-steep site and a winemaker who knows how to let it speak. Small-batch Adelaide Hills Pinot with plenty of character - the 2025 is well worth a look.

Customer Reviews

Scary Gully sits high in Forest Range, where shallow, rocky soils and an exposed position shape the wine. Dark fruit, bramble and spice meet firm structure and fine tannin. The vines have not been irrigated for 12 years, allowing the sandstone, quartz and bony soils to show clearly.

Gentle Folk

Gareth and Rainbo Belton are the Gentle Folks, both in name and in sensibility. They are gentle, soulful people, both originally seaweed experts, who turned their hands to farming grapes with an organic and sustainable approach. Today they are crafting some of the most legitimately exciting and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills and are firmly rooted in the upper echelon of Australia's lo-fi wine scene.

Their wines cover multiple sub-regions across the Adelaide Hills. There are no additions during the winemaking process, save for a splash of SO2 at bottling to keep the wines pristine as they travel from the Beltons' home to yours. The worlds of fine wine and natural wine collide in the Gentle Folk range. They are beautiful people making increasingly breathtaking wines that you definitely want to check out.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
