Description

This is perhaps Australia's best Sangiovese.

Mark Walpole is one of the rare Australian viticulturists who genuinely understands how to wrangle Sangiovese. Teaming up with winemaker Adrian Rodda, the Fighting Gully Road label consistently proves that you don't need to be in Chianti to get this notoriously stubborn grape to behave.

The fruit is pulled entirely from the upper, sun-exposed slopes of the Aquila Audax Vineyard in Beechworth. Up here, the vines dig into a tough mix of shale and metamorphic rock, forcing them to work hard and naturally restricting yields.

The blend of the 2025 is 95% Sangiovese backed by a 5% splash of Colorino to help lock in colour and structure. Fermented wild across a mix of stainless steel and oak vats with a portion of whole berries kept intact, the juice spends a full 28 days on skins before maturing in large Italian-coopered casks.

It drinks exactly as great Sangiovese should - dusty, tense, and built for the dinner table. The '25 is maybe a little lighter on its feet than the last couple of vintages, with wild berries, a rub of crushed sage, and the chalky tannin the grape is famous for driving a long, dry finish.

"Think of the first Australian sangiovese you ever tried and then try this – the two are worlds apart. The fruit sweetness, so obvious back then, is now one layer of many, a multi-cast member... Think you know sangiovese? Think again."

96 points - "Think of the first Australian sangiovese you ever tried and then try this – the two are worlds apart. The fruit sweetness, so obvious back then, is now one layer of many, a multi-cast member that includes dried herbs, black pepper, sun-dried tomato, leaf and earth among redcurrant, cherry and red plum fruits. And ripe fruits are joined by a savoury, light Campari note that shows some sangiovese attitude, finishing cherry-pip dry. Think you know sangiovese? Think again." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

The 2025 Sangiovese is 95% Sangiovese. 5% Colorino. A portion of the grapes were de-stemmed to stain whole berries, while the balance were crushed. Fermentation took place in a mixture of stainless steel and oak vats using indigenous yeasts with the wine remaining on skins for a total of 28 days prior to pressing. The wine was then matured in predominately Italian-coopered large casks.

This Sangiovese is a medium bodied wine, savoury and textural, with a beautiful line of fine-grained tannins and acidity running through the palate. The wine delivers enticing aromas of sour cherry and plum, with nuances of dried herb.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
