Description

Gamay is often treated as just a light, playful drink, but Nick Farr approaches it with the same serious intent as his Pinot Noir. Grafted onto own-rooted Cabernet vines planted back in 1999, this site features a mix of black cracking clay and submerged volcanic boulders. It yields a Gamay that perfectly balances the grape's natural joy with genuine structure and depth.

The winemaking here leans into classic techniques to build that complexity. Hand-picked whole bunches are sealed in a tank for a 10-day carbonic maceration to capture those bright, lifted aromatics. From there, the fruit is foot-stomped, pressed, and sent to seasoned five-year-old barrels to finish fermentation and rest for eight months before bottling.

In the glass, it hits a great middle ground between playful and serious. The nose opens with bright summer berries and ripe cherries, backed by earthy, gamey notes and a touch of graphite. On the palate, it delivers a silky, mouth-filling generosity tied together by vibrant acidity and well-defined tannins. It is a highly detailed, savoury take on the variety that still packs plenty of immediate drinking pleasure.

Terrific wine from one of Australia’s greatest

Complex, moreish gamay. Quite full-bodied. Quite savoury. Brilliant value.

Nice structural Gamay

Nice fruit weight and spice on the palate. Nose a bit shy straight up, rewards a splash in the decanter or a workout in the glass

Try not to sell all of this

This was the wine I really wanted to review. Current house favourite.

The gamay was grafted onto own rooted cabernet vines, which were planted in 1999. The soil is black cracking clay soil, with a mixture of submerged volcanic pebbles and boulders at one end, and a more friable and slightly more vigorous chocolate-coloured soil at the other. The first fruit was picked during the 2014 vintage.

The grapes are hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, then placed in the tank as whole bunches. The tank is sealed and left for 10 days to ferment naturally and release carbonic fruit aromas. The fruit is foot stomped, pressed on days 11 and 12, and then placed in five-year-old barrels to finish the fermentation process. The wine is bottled eight months later.

By Farr

Gary Farr is one of the most iconic winemakers in Victoria, or indeed, the country. He was responsible for taking Bannockburn in Geelong to the startling heights it reached as one of the benchmark producers of Burgundian varieties in the country. His own label, By Farr, is quite simply one of Australia's finest producers.

The Farr vineyards are based in the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, with a wide array of ancient soils resulting in small yields of incredibly intensely flavoured Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz and Viognier. With Gary's son Nick now making the wines, as well as taking his own Farr Rising label to monumental heights, this is a project set to dominate Geelong wine for years to come.

If you want to see one of the country's great winemaking families at work, anything by the Farrs will be one of the best examples of its kind in the country. Sheer class, guaranteed.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
