Description

Peter Graham’s Gamay is quickly becoming one of the smartest buys under his Domenica label. While Beechworth is famous for Chardonnay and Shiraz, Graham is proving the region's cool climate and granite soils are a natural fit for the variety. This is a serious, Cru Beaujolais-inspired wine.

The fruit comes from a south-east facing slope on the estate, sitting at 450 metres. Graham ferments in open concrete tanks with about 15% whole bunches to build a bit of structure and spice, before resting the wine for nine months in a mix of foudre and barriques.

The nose leads with black cherry, tobacco, and forest floor, backed by hints of fennel seed and crushed rose petal. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and precise. You get an earthy, wet stone character and a touch of cacao, all held together by silky tannins and crisp natural acidity.

It strikes a great balance between immediate appeal and genuine structure. It’s a brilliant drink right now, especially with a slight chill on it, but it has the bones to handle a few years in the cellar if you prefer.

This section of the Estate vineyard was planted in 2006 and grafted to Gamay in 2020. We have used five different clones in this vineyard; planted on south-east facing rows planted south-east facing on granite soils, at 450m elevation.

Vineyard practices are organic with minimal irrigation.

Bright ruby in colour. A medium-bodied wine inspired by the best Cru Beaujolais - a Gamay to be taken seriously.

Aromas of black cherry, tobacco and forest floor. Earthy wet stone, fennel seed, and cacao. An intense perfume of heirloom rose petals and sandalwood. A complex wine, precise with silky tannins. Crisp natural acidity extending the length of the palate.

An expressive wine with a structure suiting medium term ageing. A pure and vibrant expression of Australian Gamay. Our third release and clearly a natural fit for Beechworth’s climate, elevation and soil.

Domenica

Peter Graham is one of Beechworth's most thoughtful and talented winemakers. From his small plot of land on the Beechworth "Golden Mile", Pete crafts articulate and powerful wines with a gentle hand.

He farms his vineyard organically, though uncertified, with great care. The quality of fruit it yields is first class. In the winery, everything is moved via gravity. Patience is a virtue that Pete definitely possesses. No wine is released until it's 'ready'.

The Nebbiolo is one of the country's benchmarks. The Chardonnay is always in high demand given Pete's history as assistant winemaker at Giaconda. The Shiraz is the very model of modern Australian Shiraz; a wine with both power and refinement.

As Mike Bennie once noted:"If you’re into the new wave of truefine wine producers of Australia you should be onto, should get onto, Domenica. Classics in the making. Rising high."
