Description

Shaun Crinion has been making some of the Yarra Valley's best value wines since founding Dappled in 2009. His pedigree is serious, with time at Williams Selyem in California and Domaine de Montille in Burgundy shaping an approach built around minimal intervention and generosity of both flavour and value. His mission, in his own words: "make high quality unadulterated wines from special patches of dirt at realistic prices."

The Gladysdale lieu-dit is the single-vineyard expression in the range. "Lieu-dit" is a Burgundian concept for a named place, and it signals exactly what this wine is about: one site, no blending, terroir first. Gladysdale sits in the upper Yarra, and the cool conditions there give the fruit a finesse and delicacy that sets it apart from warmer valley floor Pinots.

The 2025 was warm and dry but with a long, cool finish to ripening, giving good concentration without losing freshness. The winemaking is careful and hands-on: five-day cold soak, 30% whole bunch with 70% whole berry, three weeks on skins with daily hand plunging and some foot stomping, then pressed to French oak (10% new) for 10 months on lees. Gravity bottled, unfined and unfiltered.

The result is a refined, detailed Pinot, light and elegant rather than big, with good fruit character, some whole-bunch spice and structure, and a clean, fresh finish. It's an absolutely gorgeous Pinot and another feather in Crinion's feather-full cap.

"I’d say that this is in impeccably good form – but it’s better than that. In Pinot Noir terms there is no better way to spend $50 this year... It’s a gem of a wine and more."

95 points - "I’d say that this is in impeccably good form – but it’s better than that. In Pinot Noir terms there is no better way to spend $50 this year. It’s a wine of firmness and intensity, breadth and length, and in both complexity and mouthfeel terms it’s spot on. It tastes of woodsy spices, red cherries, marzipan, smoked cedar, elaborate herb notes and pure bright cranberry, with undergrowth characters woven like electricity cables throughout. It’s a gem of a wine and more." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Vineyard

100% single vineyard from Gladysdale in the upper reaches of the Yarra Valley

Winemaking

The fruit is hand-picked, sorted and chilled overnight to 12 degrees to enable a 5-day cold soak to occur. The fruit is gently destemmed (70% whole berry) and 30% whole bunch is included… It’s then left to commence spontaneous fermentation with the natural vineyard yeasts. The ferment is lightly pigéaged (foot stomped) and hand plunged daily, spending about 3 weeks on skins. The finished wine is pressed straight to French puncheons and barriques (10% new), undergoing natural MLF in its own time and kept on lees until bottling. The wine is in oak for 10 months with further aging in stainless before being bottled via gravity. Unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Notes

The moderately warm and dry year resulted in long, cool ripening that delivers a Pinot of fantastic depth and weight. Rich cherry cola and dark chocolate aromas mix with dark plum and a gentle smokey oak spice. The palate is rich with davidson plum and dark cherry fruit, combined with a creamy roundness and fresh cherry pip acidity. Complex cigar box spices are gentle and structured tannins close the long finish.

Dappled Wines

Dappled owner/winemaker Shaun Crinion has a mountain of winemaking experience from around the globe, culminating with the establishment of a label all of his own.

Shaun's focus is on expressing the sub-regionality of the Yarra Valley through simply gorgeous Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and a growing range of experimental wines.

With the combination of Shaun's A-grade fruit from the Yarra's top growers and his precise, astute winemaking, the value on offer in the Dappled range is second to none.

He was James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2018. The wines have only stepped in quality since then though the modest pricing remains the same. Unsurprisingly, his wines sell out in short order each year. He's now regarded as one of the best small-scale producers in the modern Yarra Valley.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
