Description

Alan and Nelly Cooper have always done things their own way at Cobaw Ridge. Their small biodynamic vineyard sits high on granite in the Macedon Ranges, and they were among the first in Australia to plant Lagrein, the dark, savoury grape from Italy's Alto Adige. So it's fitting that the 2025 L'Altra - "the other" - gets a splash of it this year.

The base is Syrah and Pinot Noir, two varieties that love this chilly, elevated site. At just 13% alcohol it's pitched light and fresh, sitting somewhere between a serious rosé and a proper chillable red. The Lagrein adds a bit of colour and a savoury edge without weighing anything down.

Everything is hand-picked, fermented with native yeasts and matured in old oak – nothing forced, just the vineyard doing its thing. The result is bright and savoury, medium-bodied and layered with red and dark fruit, herbs and a touch of earth.

A wine that's genuinely fun to drink but still made with real care. Proper Cobaw - individual, thoughtful and very hard to put down.

"It feels fancy and then it feels like the wine to drink out of tumblers from an Esky filled with ice... On the drinkability scale it’s buck wild."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "This is pitched at levity and freshness, a kind of portmanteau of rosé wine and light, chillable red with a bit better haircut and slightly nicer shoes. That it gets the prized lagrein is a boon. Crisp edges, juicy core, red cherry, rose hip tea, cranberry, light slip of green almond, a touch of alpine herbs. Here we go. Super fresh feeling, slick and then with the light grip. Refreshing and inviting in fragrance alongside all this. It feels fancy and then it feels like the wine to drink out of tumblers from an Esky filled with ice. On the critical scale it rates high for balance, finesse, savoury elements in tighter, finer fruit character. On the drinkability scale it’s buck wild." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Cobaw Ridge

Alan and Nelly Cooper established their Macedon Ranges vineyard in 1985. The first certified organic and biodynamic winery in the region, the Coopers firmly believe that great wines are made in the vineyard so the vines and the integrity of their fruit are their first priorities.

They grow some of the region’s best examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Australia’s most sought-after example of Lagrein. Over the years Alan's winemaking approach has become more and more minimalist. With sulphur now the only addition in the winery and Alan using more inert vessels such as Qvevri, the Cobaw Ridge Wines have never looked better.

Small, family-owned, sensitively-grown, hand-crafted wines - this is why we love Australian wine.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
