Description

"Undoubtedly one of our finest winemakers"
- Toni Paterson MW (Gourmet Traveller Wine)

Here we have a gorgeous modern Yarra Valley Chardonnay, from the man who has mastered this combination better than anyone.

The Applecross Chardonnay comes from vines planted in 1984 at the Lance Vineyard in St Andrews - old vines, low yields, and a site with genuine character. The winemaking is deliberate and stripped back. Whole-bunch pressed straight to older French puncheons, natural ferment, MLF blocked to lock in the wine's natural acidity, then eleven months quietly on lees without stirring. No new oak.

The result has that unmistakable Bicknell precision: cool and mineral on the nose, with white nectarine, apple blossom and a saline thread running underneath. The palate is focused and architectural - not heavy, but not light either - with perfectly integrated acidity pulling everything long and clean through the finish, just the right amount of Bicknell reduction and flint to add complexity.

Drink it now or give it four to six years. Either way you won't be disappointed, this is a beautiful Chardonnay.

"Here’s a beautiful wine… Seamless, flowing, cooling, just enough sternness. It’s an architectural, serious chardonnay but with a sense of reserve, primness, preened grace. And delicious and refreshing. We’re good here."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

96+ points - "Barrel fermented and matured in older French puncheons. Bright green gold. Pure fruited and complex, with aromas of white nectarine and apple blossom, together with a gentle waft of sea spray. There's a gentle fleshiness on the palate matched by the wine's precise, perfectly integrated acidity. Beautifully balanced from beginning to end; a seamless wine to drink now and over the next four to six years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "Here’s a beautiful wine. It sits shy of medium weight, the flint and steel of Bicknell Chardonnay™ with a distinct, ticklish, briny minerality woven in threads through reserved green apple juice, just-ripe nectarine and a dash of vanilla cream lending the additional weight. Seamless, flowing, cooling, just enough sternness. It’s an architectural, serious chardonnay but with a sense of reserve, primness, preened grace. And delicious and refreshing. We’re good here." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Hand picked on February 19th 2025 at 12.8 baume and cropped at 3.1 t/Ha. The fruit was whole bunch pressed to 500 litre puncheons, with no new oak, for a natural fermentation. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was sulphured to block malolactic conversion and the wine rested on its fermentation lees without stirring for 11 months prior to bottling in February 2026.

Bicknell FC

Dave Bicknell spent nearly 25 years as chief winemaker at Oakridge, turning it into one of Australia's most celebrated producers and winning Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year along the way.

Bicknell FC is his own thing - started in 2011 with partner Nicky Harris, built around sourcing fruit from vineyards of genuine character and making authentic, delicious wines that really reflect Dave's winemaking philosophies and their distinct vineyards.

Parcels from sites like the storied Bastard Hill in Gladysdale and the Lance Vineyard in St Andrews, planted in 1975, give these wines a sense of place that's hard to manufacture. The style is precise, aromatic and food-friendly - what Dave calls "wines for the throat, not for the head."

Back in 2026 Bicknell FC won Halliday's 'Best New Winery', and a decade on this exciting brand is now his full-time focus.

Small production, serious pedigree, stunning cool climate wines.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
