Description

This is the highest and coolest of Rob Mack's single-vineyard Grenaches, coming from the iconic Hickinbotham Vineyard.

The south-facing slope here keeps the hot afternoon sun off the vines, so this is usually the last Grenache Aphelion picks. That long hang time builds plenty of flavour while keeping the freshness and drive that set it apart from the riper, darker Grenache you often see in the Vale.

The fruit was all hand-picked, fermented with 100% whole bunches, slow and cool, then left on full lees in large, neutral French oak until bottling in February 2026. There's no heavy oak and no tricks. You get lifted cranberry, bramble and cherry on the nose, then rosehip, just-ripe strawberry and blood orange with lots of herbal, briary character. It's medium-bodied, with crisp acid and a rasp of savoury tannin that carries it long.

This is a structural Grenache that will certainly age, but if you're opening it now, give it a good decant. A serious, sensational Grenache.

"Immediately savoury, straight up on the nose, then decidedly so through the palate, with grippy, pithy, pleasingly rugged natural tannins guiding."

"This tastes like a wine from a cool site. It's as much about structure as anything, though in flavours terms it's not lacking... It's quite exquisite, really."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

96 points - "From Blocks 111–113 at the highest point of the Clarendon estate, with a southerly aspect delaying ripening. This saw 100% whole bunch and old-oak maturation. Immediately savoury, straight up on the nose, then decidedly so through the palate, with grippy, pithy, pleasingly rugged natural tannins guiding. That said, there’s a red-fruited core, with some prettiness of cherry, redcurrant and cranberry filtering through, along with ginger, cinnamon and sumac spice notes. There’s also a hint of pink peppercorn, rose and musk. Ripe, natural acidity gives this a crystalline precision, and it will age. If drinking sooner, give this ample air. The virtue will be rewarded." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "From the highest patch of the Hickinbotham vineyard in Clarendon. Blocks 111-113. South-facing too; so it’s both high and south-facing. As a result, it’s the last grenache harvested. 100% whole bunch ferment, off the back of long hang time in the vineyard. Matured in neutral/lare format oak. This tastes like a wine from a cool site. It’s as much about structure as anything, though in flavours terms it’s not lacking. In the past 12 months it’s fair to say that Aphelion has thoroughly won me over; this is more outright proof. Boysenberry, dust, a light rendition of red licorice, fragrant herb notes, suede-leather characters but in a fresh fruit context, smatterings of dried flowers and spices. It’s quite exquisite, really. Strawberry and red cherry characters add a bit more brightness and/or energy. And the tannin framework – which shouldn’t ‘t have been left to last, because it’s a main feature – is web-like but firm; this wine gives you the kind of handshake that you build a life around." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

palate

The highest altitude wine in the range with vibrancy and crisp acid drive, red fruits mingle with herbal briar characters to create a wine of freshness and depth.
region notes

Sourced from Blocks 111-113 at the highest elevation of the Hickinbotham vineyard in Clarendon. A southerly aspect provides respite from the hot afternoon sun during ripening often meaning that this fruit is the last Grenache harvested with a very long hang time on the vine to produce a very well-developed flavour profile.
winemakers comments

Part of our premium SV Grenache range, the fruit used to make this wine is sourced from a single vineyard in the Clarendon area of McLaren Vale. The fruit was hand-picked on the 3rd March and processed as a 100% whole bunch ferment. After a slow and cool ferment the fruit was pressed to large format neutral French oak where it remained on full lees until racking for bottling in February 2026.

Aphelion

Aphelion was established by Rob Mack and Louise Rhodes with a clear vision. They had one thing on their mind, to craft: "Genuine, Authentic, Quality McLaren Vale Grenache."

A couple of vintages in and they are right on the money. They have close relationships with local growers in the Vale who provide them with excellent Grenache fruit and Rob's deft touch in the winery takes care of the rest.

The range is slowly growing, as is their family. Their investigation into their pet variety is deepening, as is their fan base. The small batches of wine that come out of the Aphelion stable should have a close eye kept on them, more often than not there's something exciting and great value in the bottle.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
