Description

Here we have one of the most impressive releases yet from this excellent artisan Barossa producer.

From a patch of vines planted in 1956 by the Schild family in Vine Vale, this is classic Barossa Grenache made with a modern, thoughtful touch. Susan and Michael Papps have worked with this site for over a decade, drawn to the perfume, the consistency, and the elegance that comes naturally from those deep, sandy soils.

Each year they pick in two stages – the first early for brightness and lift, the second later for depth and structure. Some whole clusters go into the ferment for fine, chalky tannin and a little savoury tension, while a small amount of new French oak adds polish without getting in the way of the fruit.

It’s wonderfully balanced – red cherry, pomegranate, rose and warm spice, gliding over a silky palate with gentle grip and that lovely Vine Vale freshness through the finish. Pure, poised and quietly complex, it’s one of those wines that’s just as rewarding now as it’ll be in a few years’ time.

Yelland & Papps has knocked this release out of the park! 1956-planted Vine Vale grenache. Savoury and spicy with just the right amount of wild-eyed sinew and slink. Wild strawberry, raspberry and red/dark cherries. Cut with exotic spice, suggestions of mountain herbs and meats glazed with hoisin, dried cranberry, cola, an expression of blood orange oil and a touch of charcuterie. Aromatically, it's a damn appealing wine and the palate follows the same line of enquiry – savoury and purely fruited with a sheath of exotic amaro and meaty goodness, fine, powdery tannins and a composed, long-play finish.

Planted in 1956 by the Schild family, this Grenache captures the elegance and restraint that Vine Vale’s deep sandy soils are renowned for. We’ve worked with this block since 2013, drawn to its consistency, perfume, and natural finesse. The aim is always to let the terroir shine, sometimes with two separate picks: one earlier for vibrancy and lifted aromatics, the other later for depth and structure. A portion is fermented whole cluster, allowing the stems to contribute fine tannin and absorb some alcohol, lifting the palate and adding structural tension. A small portion of new French oak adds subtle framing without overpowering the fruit. The result is a poised, expressive Grenache, red cherry, pomegranate, dried rose, and warmspice glide across a silken palate. Beautifully balanced, savoury, and cellar-worthy, yet undeniably delicious now.
