Description

Underhill is the sleeper in the premium Yarra Yering range, and it's one of the best Shiraz in the valley. Winner of the Best Shiraz trophy at the 2026 Yarra Valley Wine Show, it’s a concentrated, firmly structured release from this classic site.

The single block was planted in 1973 and acquired by Yarra Yering in 1988. Its west-facing slope, clay soils and an unidentified Shiraz clone unique to the block give Underhill a distinct identity within the estate. Sarah Crowe uses whole berries and a portion of whole bunches, with half the wine fermented and matured in a large oak cask.

Black plum and boysenberry come with pepper, graphite and a little smoked-meat character. It’s medium-bodied at 13.5%, with concentrated fruit and firm, fine tannins carrying a long, savoury finish.

A trophy-winning Underhill from vines more than fifty years old, and a particularly strong release to put away.

Trophy, Best Shiraz - Yarra Valley Wine Show 2026

97 points – "From a shiraz vineyard planted in '73 adjacent to Yarra Yering. 10% whole bunches and matured mainly in large format oak (15% new). A deep, bright crimson. A brooding version of this bona fide Yarra classic. Aromas of boysenberry, blackcurrant, black pepper and lifted spice. On the palate this is compact and tightly coiled, just waiting to release its energy. A very good wine in the making that will clearly reward up to 15 years, if not longer, in the cellar." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 Points – "Deep ruby red with distinct purple at the rim. Mulberry, blood plum, iodine and black pepper aromas. Complex and balanced, ripe purple berry fruit forms the base with layers of iodine, fresh ground pepper, clove and cinnamon bark. Fine gravel tannins sit harmoniously, carrying to a very long, structured and drying finish. Demands revisiting." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

96 Points – Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal

94 Points – Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Customer Reviews

Blue and black berry fruits, graphite and charcuterie in a brooding and mysterious way. Glossy cool climate Shiraz, deliciously medium-bodied yet with intensity. Ripe black plum fruits and some charred oak barrel sit alongside some stalk tannin adding a lovely grip driving the fruit persistence on the back palate.

VINES

A single block of Shiraz planted in 1973 on a neighbouring property, it was ideally located to be acquired by Yarra Yering in 1988. With a slight west-facing slope and clay-based soil, it’s perfectly suited for cool-climate Shiraz. The clone remains unknown and is unique to this block.

WINEMAKING

Hand harvested, bunches are sorted before processing as whole bunches or berries. Half of the block ferments in a 3500L oak cask; 20% whole bunch, pressed and returned to the cask for maturation. The remainder ferments in half-tonne open fermenters, hand plunged twice daily. Pressed to release the last fermenting juice, then aged 12 months—50% in a five-year-old 3500L cask, 50% in French oak puncheons (10% new).

Cellaring

Typically, one of the Yarra Yering wines to shine earlier however the 2024 release has serious cellaring capacity. It will shine at 5–10 years, yet with a proven pedigree will continue evolving over 10+ years under suitable conditions.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
