Description

Six Portuguese varieties planted on a rocky Yarra Valley hillside make Dry Red No.3 one of Yarra Yering’s most distinctive wines. The 2024 picked up the trophy for Best Other Red Blend at the Yarra Valley Wine Show, and it’s one of our favourite wines in the YY lineup.

The vines date back to 1990, planted in tribute to the grapes of Portuguese Vintage Port. Touriga Nacional and Tinta Cão lead the blend, with Sarah Crowe and the team using initial foot treading, gentle handling and ten months in old oak to preserve fragrance and fruit.

Plum and mixed berries come with lavender, liquorice and dried herbs. It’s medium-bodied and fresh at 13% alcohol, with concentrated fruit and fine, persistent tannins that become more apparent as you drink.

Give it time to open if you’re drinking it young, or follow it over the next 6-8 years. A truly unique Yarra Valley wine.

Trophy (Best Other Red Blend) - Yarra Valley Wine Show 2025

Gold Medal - Yarra Valley Wine Show 2025

Silver Medal - Royal Queensland Wine Awards 2025

96+ points - "A blend of 46/23/15/7/5/4% touriga nacional/tinta cão/tinta roriz/tinta amarela/alvarelhão/sousão, all sourced from 1990 plantings. A deep, bright purple. Aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and licorice root make for another compelling Dry Red No. 3. Medium bodied; this has lovely intensity through the mid-palate while remaining poised and focused. The tannins are suave and long. You can enjoy this now, with food, but its best is yet to come." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Over a long period of time Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 3 has proven itself to be a masterstroke of both concept and execution. It’s a dry red wine grown on one of the best sites in the Yarra Valley, using an assortment of Portuguese grape varieties. The 2024 season has produced a blend of 46% Touriga Naçional, 23% Tinta Cão, 15% Tinta Roriz, 7% Tinta Amarela, 5% Alvarelhão and 4% Sousão. These are the last grapes harvested on the property each season. No new oak.

It’s a wine of delicacy and a wine of difference. It’s also a wine that you want to guzzle, though it has the structure and associated quality markers to make you, also, want to cellar it. It tastes of a variety of berries, ripe and red but not necessarily sweet, with herb, woods, chicory and stem characters littered modestly throughout. It’s also a perfumed wine. And a contemplative one. Indeed, it’s not a wine to smack you in the face; you need to sit and let both you and it unfurl a bit." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2024 Dry Red No 3 comprises a blend of 46% Touriga Nacional, 23% Tinta Cão, 15% Tinta Roriz, 7% Tinta Amarela, 5% Alvarelhão and 4% Sousão. Aromatically, the wine leads with a profusion of garden flowers, black olive tapenade, red apple skins, pomegranate and nutmeg, as well as moss and dried herbs. In the mouth, the wine is herbal and vibrant, with layer upon layer of flavor. This is a wine that may be surprising in its freshness and substance in one coupling. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

Customer Reviews

A highly floral and complex bouquet—lavender, satsuma plum, and balsamic. Mixed summer berry freshness and black plum fruit weight. The licorice spice of Touriga Naçional and the bright, fragrant blue fruit energy of Tinta Cão. Tinta Roriz adds savoury depth, complementing Tinta Amarela’s floral and bay leaf lift. The finesse of Alvarelhão and the acidity of Sousão tighten, brighten, and drive the long palate.

VINES

Fruit was sourced from the New Territories planting of classic Portuguese grape varieties on a rocky terraced hillside. Paying homage to the classic Portuguese Vintage Ports, Yarra Yering plantings date back to 1990, embodying the forward-thinking continuance and evolution of the vineyard.

WINEMAKING

The last fruit harvested from the vineyard. Handpicked and destemmed, some varieties in a ‘field blend’ style, retaining as many whole berries as possible. The first working of the must is by foot, as in a traditional Portuguese lagar, to extract tannins from seeds and skins. After this, all handling is gentle, with careful extraction of tannins during fermentation and a final gentle pressing from skins. Maturation in old oak barrels for 10 months before blending for balance.

Cellaring

Expressive when young, it can have an austere palate that belies the aroma. This wine will continue to evolve easily for up to 8 years, maybe more, under suitable cellaring conditions.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
