Description

Dry Red No.2 is one of the wines that made Yarra Yering a name for collectors. Dr Bailey Carrodus’s Rhone-inspired blend remains a benchmark for Yarra Valley Shiraz, with the 2024 drawing on vines dating back to the estate’s original 1969 plantings.

This release is 99% Shiraz and just 1% Viognier. Sarah Crowe retains whole berries for fragrance, adding a little Viognier skin to selected fermenters before fifteen months in French oak, around a third new.

Plum and raspberry come with violets, liquorice, black olive and warm spice. It’s concentrated and supple, with firm, finely woven tannins giving the generous fruit structure and a long, savoury finish.

There’s plenty to enjoy already, but No.2 has a proven record over decades. A stunning release of this magical wine and a serious addition to the cellar.

"The palate is medium to full bodied, powerful and plush yet beautifully balanced ... Everything is in place for this beauty to become softer and more complex over the next 15–20 years."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

98 points – "Deep rich ruby with a bright purple edge. Blood plum and dark exotic spice aromas. Plum and raspberry fruit base with layers of iodine, charcuterie, black pepper, clove and nutmeg unfolding through the glide. Gossamer acidity and silken yet powerful tannins ensure remarkable length and a poised, fragrant finish." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

97+ points – "A blend of 99/1% shiraz/viognier. Fermented with whole berries and matured in barriques (30% new). A medium-deep crimson purple. Concentrated with dark fruits, cedar and melted licorice. There's an earthiness, too. The palate is medium to full bodied, powerful and plush yet beautifully balanced. The tannins are subsumed by the fruit. Everything is in place for this beauty to become softer and more complex over the next 15–20 years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "The 2024 Dry Red No 2 is perfumed, floral and fine on the nose, with rose petals, pomegranate, white flowers and paprika dolce. The tannins show immense finesse on the plate. This wine is elegant, restrained and lovely. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 Points – Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal

Customer Reviews

Complex and layered; sweet and savoury all at once. The fragrance is a melting pot of violets, raspberry, plums, a whisker of bramble, fragrant five spice and black olive. Moderate in weight; the summer pudding fruits come in all colours dialling up the flavour. There is cigar box and cardamom spice lending intrigue and a dry spice finish coupled by firm sinewy tannins that ably support the fruit.

VINES

1969 original vineyard establishment plantings of Shiraz, with additional Shiraz planted across the 1990’s as the neighbouring property was acquired. Tiny amounts of Viognier drawn from vines planted between 1984 to 1995.

WINEMAKING

Fruit was hand-picked, chilled overnight then transferred across a sorting table and destemmed directly to the Yarra Yering half-tonne openfermenters. As much whole berry as possible is retained to encourage perfume. A small portion of fermenters had frozen Viognier skins; tiny yields this year, added to the bottom. The wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barriques, 35% new before blending and bottling.

Cellaring

Approachable but softens and gains complexity with age. It has a proven track record and thus will evolve for 20+ years under suitable cellaring, though medium-term aging also offers rewards.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
