Description

Dry Red No.1 starts with the Cabernet vines that founded Yarra Yering in 1969. More than fifty years on, this remains one of Australia’s benchmark Cabernet blends, and the 2024 is a particularly convincing reason to make room in the cellar.

Sarah Crowe combines 70% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Part of the Cabernet spends up to eight weeks on skins in a large oak cask, while whole-berry fermentation gives the supporting varieties fragrance and generosity.

Blackcurrant and plum come with bay leaf, cedar and a savoury black olive edge. It’s medium-bodied and concentrated, with supple fruit, fine tannins and a long finish that keeps revealing more as it opens. So long, so complex, so delicious.

The appeal of 2024 is how well it all fits together already, without sacrificing the structure for twenty years or more of development. One of Australia's most iconic Cabernets and an essential wine for collectors.

98 points – "A blend of 70/16/11/3% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/petit verdot, the cabernet coming from the original '69-planted vineyard. Matured in barrique (35% new). A pure and focused bouquet of pure cassis, gravel and subtle cedar. Equally impressive on the concentrated yet elegant palate. The fine-grained, persistent tannins are in perfect harmony with the fruit. Seamless. A great Dry Red No. 1 in very fine form; a wine that will age effortlessly over the next decade, if not two." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

98 points – "Deep ruby-red colour with a bright purple tinted rim. Cassis, dried rosemary, crushed granite and cigar box aromatics. A medium bodied delight, the integration of layers is outstanding and takes time to unravel. Black fruit forms the centre stage, with tobacco leaf, cedar wood, dried rosemary and black olive notes ebbing and flowing. It rolls incredibly long, leaving a fine whisper of saline minerality. Enjoyable now, with much more to come." - Stuart Knox (The Real Review)

97 Points – Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal

96 points – "This is a beautiful release. It’s classically styled, classically structured and classically long. It tastes of bay and blackcurrant, cedar and olives, plums and assorted dried leaves. It’s autumnal, sweet with fruit, fresh, mouthwatering and satisfying at once. The length of the finish here, pulsed with dusty tannin, is a magic to behold in itself. This is one of those “beauty lives here” wines." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

Blue and black berry fruits with a comforting, rustic iodine feel, complemented by some bay leaf lift. Warming clove spice, a hint of graphite and background oak char bring both flavour and tannin. Glossy, plump fruit, energy and fine tannins form a solid foundation for a long future. Complex and layered, never intimidating but exciting to watch evolve, this vintage is particularly complete on release.

VINES
The first plantings into block No. 1 were these Cabernet Sauvignon vines, and the name was born. Malbec was also part of the original 1969 plantings. Merlot vines were originally interplanted with Cabernet, with subsequent plantings in 1990 along with Petit Verdot.
WINEMAKING
Hand-harvested and sorted, only the best berries make the cut. Cabernet is crushed for structure, while Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot undergo whole berry fermentation for fragrance and weight. Mostly fermented in half-tonne fermenters, hand plunged twice daily. One third of the Cabernet ferments in 3,500L oak cask, with up to 8 weeks on skins for complexity, the balance matured 15 months in French oak barriques, 35% new.

Cellaring
Under suitable cellaring conditions it will evolve for 20+ years if you wish to show restraint, but this is not a hard and fast rule, it will be wonderful anytime along the way.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
