Description

Perched high in Clarendon, the century-old bush vines of Bernard Smart are the stuff of legend. Planted in 1922, these gnarled old trunks yield tiny crops of Grenache that always speak more of finesse than power - lifted, detailed wines that stand apart from their fleshier Blewitt Springs cousins.

The 2024 vintage has played beautifully into the site’s strengths. A cool start to the season slowed ripening, preserving brightness and natural acidity before the summer warmth arrived. The result is a wine of striking clarity: savoury and perfumed up front – bay leaf, rose petal, mint and a flicker of spice – before the palate unfurls in waves of cranberry, cherry and wild herbs. A mineral snap of wet stone runs through the finish, framed by fine, stony tannins.

Made gently in open fermenters and matured entirely in stainless steel, this is Grenache in its most pure, chiselled form – bright, savoury and incredibly drinkable, but with the pedigree to reward time in the cellar. A benchmark look at Clarendon’s cooler, more refined face of McLaren Vale Grenache.

"This is layered and texturally complex, with fresh acidity and great drive through the long finish. These are excellent wines—expressions of their places—and they come warmly recommended."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "Cherry, red fruits, pomegranate, floral, spicy. Medium-bodied, crisp cranberry juice acidity, fine sandy tannin grip, a thyme and rose mouth-perfume, with a fresh and spicy finish of excellent length. This is so well-etched and fine-boned, yet it has a certain quiet power too. Lacy. Refined. Outstanding." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points - "The 2024 Smart Vineyard Grenache Clarendon is supple and saturated in flavor. This has more torque, more low-down power than the high-toed aromatics of the Blewitt Springs fruit, and it expresses most clearly in the tannins. This is, while inherently delicate, more gritty and structural than the ethereal Blind Spot from the same vintage tasted alongside. The fruit here is picked seven to 10 days later than the Blewitt Springs fruit. This is layered and texturally complex, with fresh acidity and great drive through the long finish. These are excellent wines—expressions of their places—and they come warmly recommended. 13.5% alcohol, 3.26 pH and 6.61 total acidity. Sealed under screw cap." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "From the legendary Clarendon vineyard. Destemmed, 13 days on skins, matured in steel (82%) and an older puncheon (18%). The relatively pale hue presages a classic Smart vineyard wine of refined delicacy, savoury import, fine, sandy tannin and a resolute seam of acidity. The latter will knit into the wine more with time, as the balance is there, as is the fruit. Dried cherry, tart cranberry, dehydrated orange peel, sumac, cinnamon, some dusty whole white pepper notes. As said, this needs time to unlock, but it’s a wine speaking lucidly of site. Renae Hirsch’s quietly thoughtful winemaking will assuredly shepherd this into something special, and likely the score could tick up." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "Deep-ish red laced with purple; dried herbs/sage and forest floor aromas fill the bouquet, which is subtly spiced and leads into an intense, elegant and very savoury palate which finishes with very drying but ripe tannins. This is a tighter, less overt wine than the Blind Spot, and promises to yield more in future. The potential is bubbling away there just below the surface." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Grenache Becoming More Important in Aus.

Another good quality McLaren grenache to be enjoyed with a wide variety of food.
Attractive bouquet & pallate.
Suggest a few years in the cellar would be helpful.

The 2024 vintage had early season cooler conditions that allowed the fruit to mature relatively slowly through the early season.
This was a good platform to enable the fruit to maintain its’ brightness during the heat of January and February resulting in good fruit expression and tannin structure.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
