Description

Wantirna Estate is one of the pioneers of the modern Yarra Valley. Reg and Tina Egan planted the vineyard back in 1963, and their daughter Maryann Egan now makes the wines, with the Lily Pinot Noir a benchmark for the valley's southern fringe.

It's a tiny site, just 10 acres, but its three blocks of Pinot are hand-picked separately, sometimes up to two weeks apart. The Mature Block, planted in the early 1970s, brings the savoury tones and fine tannins. The Front Block adds spice and the Fruit Tree Block gives generous fruit.

The 2024 is a different animal from the brooding, backward '23. It's brighter and prettier, with red summer berries, florals and a little spice up front, then a juicy, lively palate that finishes on velvety old-vine tannins. Maryann has watched it develop for 20 months since bottling and reckons it's showing real density and power now.

Old vines, a family estate with real history and a perfumed, juicy 2024 that's already drinking well. A cracking Yarra Pinot.

"This is quite different from the brooding, backward '23... By all means, open this now and enjoy it with Peking duck, but know that it will age very nicely over the next decade."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "A light, bright crimson. This is quite different from the brooding, backward '23. A pretty, perfumed bouquet redolent of red summer berries, fresh florals and a little spice. The palate is lively and juicy before finishing with velvety, persistent old-vine tannins. By all means, open this now and enjoy it with Peking duck, but know that it will age very nicely over the next decade." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "This is a bolder iteration of Lily. Poached strawberry, spice, a certain creamy richness and power to the wine, kind of in the mould of a Californian Pinot. It’s nutty, ripe red fruits, some blood orange and rhubarb, and vaguely autumnal things, perhaps a little breathy in alcohol, which is a little unusual for this wine, and there’s some fine sandy tannin, a bit of sap to acidity, and a spicy finish of good length, with some mint and squishy strawberry to close. Quite plump, but also has some perfume and a good amount of character." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

The vineyard has three distinct blocks of Pinot Noir, all hand-harvested separately. Despite the vineyard area being only 10 acres in total, the different blocks each deliver unique characters, and often there is up to two weeks' difference in the harvest dates. The mature block—with vines dating back to the early 1970s—gives the wine its savoury tones and fine tannins. The Front block fruit is spicy, while the Fruit Tree block is generously fruity. Each component adds complexity when blended together, creating the Pinot Noir style for which Wantirna Estate is known.

We have been watching the wine evolve since it was bottled 20 months ago, and we love how it's developed. It has really delicious fruitiness teamed with textural density and power right now. The wine will continue to age beautifully. – Maryann Egan

Wantirna Estate

Wantirna Estate is a family affair, founded in 1963 by Reg and Bertina Egan.

This bucolic old-world-inspired vineyard is located not far from Melbourne town centre; now surrounded by suburbia, the proverbial rose amongst the thorns.

Now run primarily by Reg and Bertina's daughter Maryann, the estate produces a small premium range of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and classic medium-bodied Bordeaux blends that are elegant, classic and exceptional options for the cellar.

Reg describes their vineyard as a "never-ending world of change and enchantment".

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
