Description

The Thorley Riesling is grown by Tessa & Jeremy at VS&B high up on their small vineyard in Stanley outside Beechworth. It's frightfully cold up there on the property, perfect conditions for growing fine-boned, delicate Rieslings.

Jeremy has spent a vintage at the great Keller Wines in the Rheinhessen, and Tessa is obsessed with the variety - it's fair to say they know their way around Riesling. With this wine, made from their own home-grown fruit, no stone is left unturned getting this to its full potential.

In contrast to their King Valley Rieslings, this is close to bone dry. Wild ferment, time in old oak on its lees adds texture and complexity to what is breathtakingly pure fruit. It's a remarkable thing to drink and ponder over.

One of Australia's most unique Riesling projects and a future classic.

"A wine to open your eyes to the beauty of riesling from the upper reaches of Beechworth... Acidity shines pure and lively, flavours run deep, and a textural weight gathers. Simply stunning."
- Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

98 points - "A wine to open your eyes to the beauty of riesling from the upper reaches of Beechworth. In the hands of two riesling makers extraordinaire, the grape sings in '24 with a rare beauty. Brings the prettiest floral perfume to the aroma, with honeysuckle and citrus blossom. Plus it's mineral bright with citrus, spiced apple, lime zest, lemongrass and a touch of white pepper. Flavours carry long and true, with a linear purity of riesling expression elevated in florals and a gentle spice. Acidity shines pure and lively, flavours run deep, and a textural weight gathers. Simply stunning." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

Our Thorley vineyard Riesling comprises two clones: GM198 and Trier 37 and occupies 0.65Ha of free-draining colluvium over shattered shale, mudstone and lenses of light slate, sitting at 820m ASL.

This is not a tank-fermented, temperature controlled, lemongrass and brown lime juice dry Riesling. We ferment our Thorley Riesling in neutral puncheons and demi muids to dryness, allowing indigenous wild and warm ferments to run to encourage more savoury fruits. Being at a high altitude we're able to get to a reasonably high ripeness without significant acidity loss, so this is ripe, gently textural, impactfully structured Riesling. Our stylistic inspirations are the Federspiel to Smaragd Riesling styles of Krems and Kamptal in Austria, and some of the GG Riesling styles of Germany.

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
