Description

So many interesting new things emerging from the Vigneron Schmolzer & Brown cellar at the moment.

With their core range of Pret-a-Blanc, Rouge and Rose consistently delivering value, and their single vineyard wines from cooler sites in Beechworth and the Whitlands region finding their way onto premium wine lists and into considered cellars, they are now experimenting with smaller batches of fruit to make a few curios that add colour to the range.

This Sylvaner is a serious look at the variety. A little barrel ferment and a touch of skin contact for a little grip have done wonders for this often-times neutral variety.

The flavours are subtle, all flowers, spice and a pristine line of refreshing acidity. Small amounts made but 100% worth a look.

"This is so floral and so detailed and so well flavoured and so lingering, but the grainy, rind-like, dry tension of the texture is what really captivates. A kind of salty, tonic-like, sea-spray aspect doesn’t hurt either. VS&B are really on a winner here."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"Wonderful slippery texture, too. There’s great focus, freshness and purity on display here. A great release."

94 points - "Kasia Sobiesiak described last year’s Schatz Sylvaner as an “aromatised bitter white wine with a dazzling texture” and given that the same kind of descriptor applies here, I can’t top that. This is so floral and so detailed and so well flavoured and so lingering, but the grainy, rind-like, dry tension of the texture is what really captivates. A kind of salty, tonic-like, sea-spray aspect doesn’t hurt either. VS&B are really on a winner here." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

94 points - "White florals and melon preside over a pretty set of aromas with a slatey mineral shot through the centre. A swirl of the glass unlocks anjou pear, green apple, lemon and green herbs. The palate is defined by freshness and line, with racy white grapefruit and lemon leading the charge along with an underpinning of white flowers and minerality. There is a crystalline feel through the finish which is clean, pure and long thanks to integrated, slatey and grapefruit laced acidity. Wonderful slippery texture, too. There’s great focus, freshness and purity on display here. A great release." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

A crisp, savoury Sylvaner from the Darling (Schatz in German) vineyard in the upper reaches of the King Valley. Dry and refreshing, with delicate floral aromatics that build, savoury white herbs, textural grapefruit pithy phenolics from brief skin contact, and lingering acidity. A combination of stainless and old oak fermentation. Most have never heard of the variety, but so many re-order it once they’ve tried it!

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.
