Description

Tessa Brown and Jeremy Schmolzer keep proving they’ve got the magic touch with Riesling, and this Obstgarten bottling really shows it. The fruit comes from a high-altitude vineyard in Whitlands, where cool nights and long ripening make for seriously vibrant wines. Everything is hand-picked and wild-fermented, with the pair keeping things simple and low-intervention as always.

This 2024 release leans toward a late-harvest style, with a nice bit of sweetness upfront that’s reined in by cracking acidity. It’s got plenty of fruit and texture, but finishes clean and fresh, which keeps you coming back for another sip. No botrytis here - just ripe, clean fruit handled with care.

It’s the kind of wine that feels generous and bright all at once - easy to love now, but it’ll be fun to see where it goes with a bit of time. Another smart release from a team that’s making some of Victoria’s most exciting Riesling right now.

"Bursts of orange blossom, candied lemon, orange cake, and sherbet on the palate, tightened by nervy acidity. Alpine herbs and subtle mandarin skin bitterness linger. Immaculate balance and impressive complexity. Brilliant."
- Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

"Sweetness and acidity in fine balance. Fresh and lively scents of citrus peel, fresh-cut apples, pear and alpine flowers. Tangy citrus energy that keeps going. So bright, so right."
- Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Sweet, soft, complex, intense and long. Apples and oranges, hay and lemonade, grapes and blossomy lime. A little grip, but born to run. It’s fab."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

96 points - "Perfectly ripe mandarin juice and pith kick things off, before lemon thyme, Meyer lemon, sage, slatey minerals and green apple skin. Time in the glass allows for some orange blossom notes to emerge. The palate has a delicious burst of upfront sweetness in the form of orange blossom, candied lemon, orange cake, and orange sherbet before a taut and nervy acid line coils it all into linearity, guillotining the sugar and drawing length. The alpine herb notes reappearing along with a subtle mandarin skin bitter edge. Immaculate balance as always, with the wine’s 43 grams of residual sugar sitting seamlessly, and an impressive cascade of complexity throughout. This wine takes you on a journey, and what a journey it is. Brilliant. 105 dozen bottled." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

95 points - "Spätlese style, later-harvested fruit, overnight skin contact, wild ferment in stainless steel and old oak, no botrytis. The winemakers achieve the fine balance required of sweetness and acidity. The result is a wine of 43g/L RS that sings in harmony. Fresh and lively in scent in citrus peel, fresh-cut apples, citrus, pear and alpine flowers. There is a delightful liveliness here played to a tangy citrus beat that just goes and goes. So bright, so right." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "This is pretty amazing. Sweet, soft, complex, intense and long. Not drastically sweet, I should add; just enough. Apples and oranges, hay and lemonade, grapes and blossomy lime. There’s a little bit of grip but not a lot; it was born to run, and run it does. It’s fab." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Light straw appearance. The nose is all fresh candied mandarine segments, meyer lemon, orange blossom and perhaps some roseyness and a citrus leaf cut. In the mouth the wine rolls reasonably sweetly, somewhat peach kernelly with more orange/ mandarine and lime hits. A massive juicy acid, cottees concentration. Some peach kernel and hints of vanilla to length.

We make a range of wines from Beechworth, the King Valley, and occasionally the Alpine Valleys as we've been waiting for our own property to reach maturity. The Thorley wines are solely from our farm. The Brunnen vineyard is a tiny parcel of vines across the road from us owned by our neighbours, which we've been working with since 2014. The Obstgarten wines are from a high altitude Riesling vineyard in Whitlands, King Valley. Our Prêt-à-Blanc, Prêt-à-Rosé and Prêt-à-Rouge wines are all blends, assembled with an eye to easy drinking.

Every one of our wines is made with hand-picked fruit. The wines ferment with only indigenous yeast (the waxy stuff on the outside of the grape) and if the wines go through Malolactic fermentation, then that is spontaneous. Where possible, we'd like the only addition made to our wines to be preserving sulphur dioxide. Once our own vineyard is old enough to be mechanically cultivated, we will undertake conversion to organic viticulture there.

We spend a lot more time in the field than in the cellar, so our winemaking practises are pretty simple. We don't fine, and only filter our white wines.

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown

Tessa and Jeremy are playing a long-game with their Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown label.

They have invested in a block of land high in the hills behind Beechworth and have planted 10,000 vines on it over the last couple of years with the plan to farm it organically. Tessa has a wealth of experience from time at Sorrenberg and Kooyong, Jeremy is an architect by trade with an eye for detail.

It comes as no surprise that the buzz around this husband and wife team is palpable and the praise is high. Max Allen called them, “one of a remarkable number of impressive new wine labels to have cropped up in Beechworth over the last five years.”

They are going to be at the forefront of Beechworth wine for many years to come.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
