Description

A cool, classy example of Adelaide Hills Chardonnay here from Alan Varney, with some tangy oxidative characters

This is just the way you should treat cool climate Chardonnay. It's fermented with wild yeast, stirred regularly in barrel, and kept in a trim, elegant frame.

These wines from Varney are incredibly stylish for the price. Fresh, modern, easily approachable yet imbued with enough complexity to keep you coming back for more. This Chardonnay is no exception.

Lovely stuff for those who enjoy finer, more slipstream versions of Chardonnay.

95 points
"It’s poised, refined, very long and very good."
- Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "From two sites, in Echunga and Macclesfield, and across five clones, this was harvested over a couple of picks. Wild fermented in seasoned Burgundy barrels (with a small carbonic component used as a final blending foil) with frequent bâttonage and seven months in oak. Cool white nectarine, apple blossom, lemon pith, lime and pomelo, with salted praline and sushi ginger. There’s charming delicacy, with a deftly light winemaking imprint, yielding a quiet precision of fruit expression, allied with depth of flavour. It’s poised, refined, very long and very good." - Marcus Ellis (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 points - "Here we have a very classy modern Adelaide Hills Chardonnay. It’s not showy and packed with fruit but impresses more with its restraint and subtlety. It opens with bright, chalky, citrus aromas with touches of nectarine and a veneer of spicy oak. A fresh and crisp palate follows, with pithy textures and ample volume before a slightly, funky yet attractive wild yeast edge to finish. Enjoy with fish tacos." - Ray Jordan (Wine Pilot)

92 points - "Acidity drives through sun-filled flavour. Gooseberry, lemon curd, cedarwood and peach flavours of above-average intensity flow into sweet spice and ripe citrus. There’s a pulpy aspect to fruit, particularly on the finish, which works well with the gentle velvet of the wine’s texture. Everything is in positive territory here. Drinking this, as a result, is a pleasure." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

    A Beautiful Chardonnay

Not big and buttery, but beautiful nevertheless.

Naturally fermented with wild yeast in seasoned French barriques with frequent lees stirring, sourced from two distinguished vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. The style is modern, with restrained oak supporting fresh, vibrant fruit, leading to a long acid driven finish.

Sourced from two distinguished vineyards in the Adelaide Hills; Echunga and Macclesfield. Specific parcels were harvested over a three week period. Some early batches harvested with high natural acidity to lend the finished blend vibrancy and length.

Varney Wines

Varney Wines began with just a "tonne for fun" for Alan Varney to play around with over a decade ago.

He took his years of experience working at top South Australian wineries, including time spent at Orlando Wines, Longview Vineyard and over a decade as senior winemaker at d’Arenberg, and poured his skills into crafting a style of wine that he and his friends and family could enjoy.

The side gig became a full-time obsession, leading to Alan purchasing a dilapidated property at the Gateway of McLaren Vale to house a tasting room alongside his wife Kathrin’s restaurant, Victor’s Place. A sustainable modern winery was built and their first commercial release was unveiled. The wines have been taking off ever since culminating with Varney being named James Halliday's Best New Winery in 2021.
