Description

Matthias and Lauren Utzinger have been in tremendous form in recent times, winning the 2026 Young Gun of Wine and really starting to turn heads with their quality Tamar Valley wines.

The Utzinger family farm their estate in Legana, in the West Tamar, and run it to organic certification. It's a picturesque site still on the younger side, and they've been patient and deliberate about coaxing the best out of it, working in micro batches and using a range of techniques to pull out the best of what the site has to offer.

For the 2024 Pinot, that means a mix of 777, D5V12 and Abel clones from the estate alongside a small portion from a neighbouring Deviot vineyard. Thirty percent went in whole bunch with carbonic maceration, the rest cold-soaked before wild ferment, then pressed into seasoned French oak. Ten months in barrel, bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result is a lovely, aromatic, red-fruited Pinot with some genuine complexity. There's a spicy, slightly wild character from the whole bunch component sitting alongside the fruit, and a fine mineral quality that runs through the finish and keeps it lively. Nice chalky tannin too.

A well-made, characterful West Tamar Pinot from a family estate on the up!

95 points - "Predominantly 777, D5V12 and Abel clones from the Utzinger estate, plus a small portion of 115 and 114 from a vineyard in Deviot, 25% whole bunch. Characters of wild strawberry, red cherry and raspberry with hints of medina spice, rhubarb, dried meats, leaf litter, shoyu, crushed stone and orange blossom. Finely composed, with a ripe, spice-laden array of red and dark fruits, fine, powdery tannins and ample drive and mineral verve." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

94 points - "The 2024 Pinot Noir is fleshy and red-fruited on the nose, with notes of pomegranate molasses, cherry pip, licorice, shaved fennel, blood plum and tapenade. In the mouth, the wine is capacious and spicy, with fine-grained tannins, which provide real chew and complexity. There is an attractive ferrous quality to this wine; it offsets the fruit and provides an abundance of joy. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The fruit is 777 and Abel clones, grown on the organically certified vineyard in Legana. The fruit is picked and processed in micro batches that feature whole-bunch components, carbonic maceration and other techniques to withdraw and express the detail inherent in this young, picturesque site. The wine was matured for 10 months in seasoned French oak and is bottled unfined and unfiltered." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

West Tamar fruit, hand-picked, 30% whole bunch as part of a carbonic maceration, cold soak before wild ferment, pressed before dryness into mainly old French oak barrels, unfined, unfiltered, screwcap.

Medium burgundy red. Tar and warm spice on the nose with fresh cherry and strawberry fruit. Some lifted red fruit aromatics with a bunchy undertone. Subtle oak influence.

Relatively soft attack, medium acidity, young chalky tannins which will soften quickly. Medium to fuller bodied with a long finish.

Utzinger

Matthias and Lauren Utzinger are rising stars of Tasmania's Tamar Valley.

Matthias, originally from Switzerland, began his winemaking journey with an apprenticeship as a cellar hand before earning a degree in Viticulture and Enology. His career took him through renowned vineyards in Switzerland, Geneva, and Provence, ultimately leading him to Tasmania. Northern Tasmania, where his wife Lauren grew up, reminded Matthias of his homeland with its cool climate and vibrant viticulture potential.

The Utzingers planted their vineyard with high-density plantings of 6,500 vines per hectare, featuring Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Syrah. Their approach to viticulture emphasizes creating habitats for beneficial invertebrates and native wildlife, enhancing biodiversity. Certified organic, the vineyard's management reflects a deep respect for the environment, with significant areas dedicated to preserving native grasslands and reforestation efforts.

Matthias’ winemaking philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard's natural characteristics to shine through. The Utzingers believe that wine is grown, not made. Their careful clonal selection, combined with organic practices, results in wines that are expressive of their terroir. Each bottle from Utzinger Wines tells the story of the land and the meticulous care taken to cultivate it.

With a range that includes Tasmanian classics like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as exciting new varieties imported from Switzerland, Utzinger Wines showcases the potential and diversity of the Tamar Valley. Theirs is surely a label to watch in the future as one of the brightest new prospects on the Tasmanian scene.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
