Description

Could this be the most interesting skin-contact wine that Laura Carter has ever made? While lovers of the Esoterico may be up in arms, this Greco done in amphora is pretty fly for a white (or orange?!) wine.

There have been a slew of skin-contact Greco wines release across Australia, and for the most part they’re exceptional. Greco, as a thin-skinned grape, is made for this style of winemaking, it can handle a long time before pressing, and still maintain an excellent tannin structure that never becomes lip curling.

This wine from UZ happily joins that pantheon. Bright orange peel, yellow peach and a subtly integrated oxidative character in the background. The tannins are furry, green appley with an awesome blood orange tang. Yum, really… just yum.

A welcome return after a stint on the sidelines. We were lucky with the amount of fruit that arrived this year - we take the entirety of Ricca Terra's tiny plantings of this variety - one of the very few active vineyards of Greco in Australia. Named Terra Cotta for the colour of the dirt that it's grown in, but now we've experimented with fermentation in our Amphora that we've knocked the dust off.

Phenolics and acidity are Greco's two claims to fame, and when made with extended skin contact, can take a variety that's primarily used for blending in Campagnia and transform it into a compelling and complex wine. Fermented on skins for 21 days, the tannin profile here is sublime - a firm, silty frame for the wine. Flavour wise it's all mango, papaya, blood orange - a litany of tropical fruits. Banging stuff.

Unico Zelo

Unico Zelo is the project of winemaking couple Brendan and Laura Carter. In their words, their aim is to create “Italian-inspired, textural and site-expressive wines” and “Australian examples of Mediterranean varieties in an approachable and jovial fashion.”

Since bursting onto the scene in 2014 with their eye-catching, outrageously good value alternative vino, the Carters have spread their wings and their range. They now make a large suite of wines, including single vineyard examples of Fiano, Nero d'Avola and Nebbiolo. They are one of the most dynamic winemaking duos in the Adelaide Hills.
