Description

Ricky Evans’ subregional Pinot series wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the south. The STH Pinot pulls from top sites in the Derwent and Coal River Valleys, and it’s the boldest, darkest and most structured of the trio – intensity wrapped in Ricky’s usual finesse.

Most of the fruit comes from Kinvarra in the Derwent (70%), where old vines on black clay and rock give depth and power. Brinktop in the Coal River (30%) brings perfume and fine detail. It’s all dark fruit – black cherry, plum, a touch of blueberry – layered with savoury spice. A hint of whole bunch (15%) adds complexity, while 10 months in barriques (10% new) smooths the edges without dulling the freshness.

Brooding yet still lifted, this is the pick if you like your Pinot with muscle and structure but still want that Tasmanian clarity and energy.

The smallest release of the range and always quick to go – don’t sleep on it.

93 points - "Lovely dark cherry fruit leads, showing a deeper-set feel compared to others in the range. Nutmeg and red rose emerge, with air bringing notes of forest floor and sweet, tilled earth. Brown spice melds seamlessly with the quality fruit, creating an alluring aromatic profile. The palate follows suit – dark cherry and deep red rose sit over nutmeg and subtle earth. Tannins are firm and chalky, acidity fine and persistent. Red florals carry through the mouth perfume, lending lift and elegance. A composed and expressive wine." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

    Tassie Perfection

The Two Tonne Pinots are Tasmanian gems. The South is the most approachable and is in perfect balance. Gorgeous fruit and savoury elements make this an outstanding Pinot for the price. I reckon it's one of our finest. Drink now or hold.

    OK

Strawberries and then a bit earthy, nothing really engaging. Aired for about an hour. Alright to drink with food, but doesn't engage you if drinking by itself

STH (south) is sourced from the Derwent and Coal River Valley’s in southern Tasmania.
From three different sites across the Derwent and the Coal River Valleys. It is the most dark fruited of the sub regional releases, driven by the mature fruit from Nocton Vineyard. It saw around 25% whole bunches in the blend overall, balancing the density and structure we find in these southern vineyards.

Woodlawn Tasmania

Woodlawn Tasmania is the umbrella under which Ricky Evans' three wine labels coalesce.

His three labels include the regional Two Tonne Tasmania series of Tamar Valley Riesling, Chardonnay and sub-regional Pinot Noirs, the experimental series of wines under the Havilah label made for his wine bar in Launceston of the same name and his Single Vineyard range of exceptional premium wines from his beloved Tamar Valley vineyards farmed by Ricky himself.

Evans is one of Tasmania's most dynamic winemakers. Over his time since serendipitously starting the Two Tonne Tasmania label in 2013, Ricky's approach to both farming grapes and making wine has matured dramatically. The young gun is now an established player in the upper echelon of the island and is set to be one of Tasmania's most influential voices in wine for many years to come.
