Description

Ricky Evans built Two Tonne Tasmania on precision, passion and a love of place. The EST Pinot Noir is his deep dive into the island’s east coast, where the wild Freycinet coastline shapes Pinot with more muscle, structure and savoury depth than its Tamar Valley cousin.

Fruit comes from a few top sites, including the rocky, windswept Blackwood Estate in Cranbrook. Dark berries, black cherry and wild herbs mingle with a soil-driven edge from the region’s granite and volcanic mix. Firm, graphite-like tannins give the wine definition, while Ricky’s light touch in the winery keeps it fresh and expressive.

Fermented as 100% whole berries, then pressed to seasoned oak (15% new) for 10 months, it’s a Pinot with poise and presence – bold but balanced, savoury yet still lifted by bright fruit.

Small production and in-demand, it’s one for Pinot drinkers who like a bit more grit and depth.

Wine Pilot 92 Points

A wine of freshness, lift, and vibrant fruit. The aromas are open and expressive – macerated strawberry, subtly earthy rhubarb, dark cherry, and raspberry compote lead the way, with a swirl unlocking violet and mashed blueberry. A glimmer of nutmeg sits beneath, along with a distinct mineral note that emerges with air. It’s bright and fruit-forward, with earth and spice providing depth and contrast. The palate is similarly lifted and vibrant. Blueberry and mulberry take the lead, followed by raspberry and dark cherry, with rhubarb, subtle earth, and nutmeg playing a supportive role. The tannins are fine-boned and chalky, laced with a touch of mocha, offering ample frame alongside a surge of refreshing acidity. Freshness abounds. A lovely, energetic wine.

Pick of the two tonnes trio

Really aromatic and the wine of the two tonnes trio that has the most mid palate generosity, tannin and finish.

    Amazing Pinot!

Can’t remember what this cost but was bloody delicious. Everything that is good about Pinot was in the wine. Wish I had bought a few more bottles.

EST is a special release sourced from the East Coast of Tasmania, with the intention of highlighting regionality within our island state.
Our EST (east) pinot noir is produced from a collection sites on the Freycinet Coast of Tasmania. Together, these sites typify what makes this sub region so exciting.

When picked on time, pinot noir from the Freycinet Coast displays a more structured style – bold and brave, savoury and soil driven. Also, typically more generous in style, with graphite-like tannin structure.

Woodlawn Tasmania

Woodlawn Tasmania is the umbrella under which Ricky Evans' three wine labels coalesce.

His three labels include the regional Two Tonne Tasmania series of Tamar Valley Riesling, Chardonnay and sub-regional Pinot Noirs, the experimental series of wines under the Havilah label made for his wine bar in Launceston of the same name and his Single Vineyard range of exceptional premium wines from his beloved Tamar Valley vineyards farmed by Ricky himself.

Evans is one of Tasmania's most dynamic winemakers. Over his time since serendipitously starting the Two Tonne Tasmania label in 2013, Ricky's approach to both farming grapes and making wine has matured dramatically. The young gun is now an established player in the upper echelon of the island and is set to be one of Tasmania's most influential voices in wine for many years to come.
