Description

Named for Dom Torzi’s mum, this is Syrah with heart - fragrant, mid-weight, and made with care from 90-year-old vines in Angaston. The vineyard sits high on ironstone and limestone soils, dry-grown and low yielding, producing concentrated but balanced fruit.

It’s all done gently: hand-picked, a bit of whole bunch, wild fermented in open vats, basket pressed, then aged in seasoned French oak. No new wood, no filtration, nothing flashy.

The 2024 is plush but measured - floral up front, dark fruited underneath, with fine tannins and a savoury edge. Medium-bodied, layered, and easy to like without being simple.

It’s a thoughtful, quietly expressive Syrah that shows just how dialled-in Dom’s winemaking has become. Great drinking now, but no rush either.

"Meaty and spicy, black olive, blackberry and black cherry... ripe dark cherry, orange peel and liquorice."

94 points - "Meaty and spicy, black olive, blackberry and black cherry, some dried flower perfume. It’s medium-bodied, but quite dense, saline and savoury with ripe dark cherry, orange peel and liquorice flavours. Tannin is soft but kind of silty in feel, quite mild in acidity, and the finish is meaty, spicy, and long. It feels a little less spritely than previous vintages, and different too, perhaps more typically Barossan, though maybe deeper and more concentrated. Very good anyway." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

    Syrah

Deep red in colour. Fruity and savoury, juicy and smooth. Concentrated. Syrah style rather than Shiraz. At it’s best on the day it’s opened.

    Not that impressed

3.7. 2022 vintage. Dark red to purple. Not sure what to make of it. Milk chocolate on the nose. Lifted fruit sweetness but more vanilla and milk chocolate after taste. A very fruit forward wine with not a lot of complexity. Would probably be ok on its own rather than with food. It’s not offensive but it doesn’t do anything for me either.

A Syrah bearing my mother's name, expressing her softly spoken manners in a style she encouraged through a natural progression of zero sulfite dosage—a true vino di tavola.

Vintage
A lovely mild vintage in the Barossa allowed flavours to build slowly with excellent acid retention, yielding fruit of deep, complex flavour. The 2024 release is deliciously showy with poise and wonder.

Style
Wonderfully perfumed nose of violets, clove, raspberries, blackberry, and blueberries. The palate carries over those aromas with added dark cherries, blackstrap liquorice, and Dutch chocolate undertones. Finishes long with lovely texture and fine, ripe tannins—just wonderful drinking!

Torzi Matthews

Some years back, noted Australian wine writer Philip White called Domenic Torzi 'Australia's Best Bargain Winemaker'. Today, that statement still could not be more accurate.

The wines from Dom Torzi and Tracy Matthews are some of the best buys in the Barossa Valley and the country. Alongside their excellent classic range of old vine Barossa Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling, they make a small amount of fascinating Italian variety wines, inspired by their Italian heritage.

At every price point, these wines hugely and consistently overdeliver and are simply a must-buy for any lover of honest, delicious Barossan wines.

"You’d have to put Dom Torzi’s Torzi Matthews wines into the ‘some of best value/most consistent wines in the country’ list, right near the shiny top. A touch of magic. An eye on drinkability. Considered vineyard sources. Gentle overlay of winemaking. He gets it. Really gets it." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
