Description

Gentle winemaking is the hallmark of Natallie Johnston, one of the most exciting young producers to come out of a place that just keeps on introducing us to exciting talent; the Yarra Valley.

Made from a small Gruyere block at the foot of the valley, this Chardonnay speaks with a steady hand. It’s not chasing big gestures - just clarity, tension, and a bit of shape where it counts. Two clones picked on the same day, co-fermented in mostly seasoned oak, with a dab of new and a fair bit of lees work over nine months to flesh things out.

There’s plenty going on without it ever feeling busy: preserved lemon, just-ripe stone fruit, a flicker of ginger biscuit. A saline snap through the mid-palate pulls everything into line. The acidity’s fine but firm, and the oak’s there if you’re looking - but it never pushes. What lingers is texture, not toast.

It’s a wine built on small, deliberate choices. Nothing overdone, nothing unnecessary. Just a calm, savoury Chardonnay that feels like it knows exactly what it’s meant to be.

"Nicely poised with its aromas of white peach, flowers, lemon zest and light marine scents. Equally subtle on the well-balanced and very even palate, finishing tensile and long. It's terrific, even now, but will continue to blossom over the short to medium term."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This is such an enjoyable wine, not least for one that’s so finely-wrought and understated... It’s cool and clean, lightly spiced, crisp with apple and grapefruit, a fine dustiness to texture, a little bit juicy too, with a zesty finish of excellent length. Lovely. Highly recommended." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

95 points - "From a vineyard in Gruyere on the Valley floor. 10% new oak, and no mlf. A bright yellow green. Nicely poised with its aromas of white peach, flowers, lemon zest and light marine scents. Equally subtle on the well-balanced and very even palate, finishing tensile and long. It's terrific, even now, but will continue to blossom over the short to medium term." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

White peach, green apple, grapefruit, vanilla wafers, a little spice, fresh mint, with a distinct sea spray thing happening. It’s cool and clean, lightly spiced, crisp with apple and grapefruit, a fine dustiness to texture, a little bit juicy too, with a zesty finish of excellent length. Lovely. Highly recommended." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Delicate but not shy

This wine has classic chardie fruit but Yarra drive and length. Hard to find both. The key thinkg though is this a delicate, beautiful expression of cool climate chardonnay

A great value chardonnay!

A great value drop that delivers a lovely expression of Yarra Valley chardonnay.

This wine was crafted from a small parcel of Chardonnay from a vineyard in Gruyere situated on grey clay loam soils nestled in the gently undulating slopes of the Yarra Valley floor. The two clones are 277 and 95, harvested on the same day, destemmed, pressed and co-fermented in French oak barriques. 10% of the blend is new oak with one second fill barrel, one third fill and the rest old, more seasoned oak.

Once chilled, destemmed and gently pressed the juice was transferred to barrel with a generous amount of solids for primary fermentation and inoculated with two different stains is yeast to promote a complimentary aromatic profile. After primary fermentation was complete the wine was then stirred, topped with more chardonnay lees and a small addition of sulphur was made. No secondary fermentation took place. The barrels then underwent Bâtonnage every 4 to 6 weeks and 9 months maturation on full yeast lees before being blended, stabilized, minimally fined, filtered and bottled. The wine is vegan.

A bright glossy bouquet of preserved lemon, fresh cut hay and summer stone fruit. Precise with fine boned acidity, salinity persists with hints of lemon pith, orchard fruits and ginger snap biscuit on the palate. A hint of creamy oak persists on the finish.

Tillie J

Natillie Johnston, also known as Tillie J, developed her passion for wine while working for cellar doors in the Yarra Valley to support her studies in Sports Science. After completing her degree, she transitioned into the wine-making industry, starting with her first harvest at Coldstream Hills Wines in 2012. Her fascination with wine culture blossomed, leading her to pursue postgraduate studies in winemaking and viticulture at the University of Melbourne.

Throughout her career, Natillie has gained experience in various wine regions across Australia and abroad, including Margaret River, the Hunter Valley, Oregon, Germany, Canada, and New Zealand. Working alongside esteemed winemakers, she honed her craft and forged lasting friendships.

Natillie's dream of starting her own wine label in the Yarra Valley became a reality when she was accepted into the "2019 Young Winemakers" program at No.7 Healesville. This opportunity enabled her to launch Tillie J Wines. Her goal is to create wines that authentically reflect their terroir, enjoyable in their youth or after maturation, and she's gaining plenty of traction. As stated in the Halliday Wine Companion... "Mark my words. Tillie Johnston is going to become a great winemaker.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
