Description

Stellenbosch-based Thistle & Weed is the project of viticulturist Etienne Terblanche and winemaker Stephanie Wiid, two friends who describe themselves as storytellers first and winemakers second. Stephanie spent a decade at Fairview before committing to this full-time, and together they've built a small, focused label around old vine sites and a hands-off approach that's earning serious attention internationally.

Brandnetal means stinging nettle in Afrikaans, a name chosen for the duality of the plant: fierce and sharp on contact, but also medicinal and restorative in the right hands. It's a fitting metaphor for the wine itself. The fruit comes from a 1980-planted block at Nietvoorbij in Stellenbosch, notable for containing over 33 different rootstocks - an old experimental plot from another era, now over 40 years old. The soils are Table Mountain sandstone and clay, and the site catches maritime influence that lends a characteristic salinity to the wine.

In the cellar the approach is deliberately minimal. Handpicked, whole-bunch pressed using free-run juice only, then naturally fermented in third-pass French oak. Nine months on gross lees with some stirring in the early months, minimal sulphur at bottling, nothing fined or filtered. The idea is to let the vineyard do the work.

The result is a taut, mineral-driven Chenin with real texture and a saline, citrus-bright finish. Just 308 cases made and an absolute bargain for high quality Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc.

95 points - "Generally my favourite of the Thistle & Weed Chenin Blancs, this comes from two old-vine parcels on the Simonsberg. Tangy, focused and refreshing it has engaging pear and lemon zest fruit, a hint of exotic sweetness, negligible oak and lots of granitic energy. 2025-30." - Tim Atkin MW

While a brandnetel (stinging nettle) may not sound particularly appealing, this wine certainly is.

Brimming with delicate notes of quince, white peach and blood orange, the palate pulls through with quintessential Chenin blanc star power, including a rich and more-ish palate and lemon-zip acidity.

Crafted in exactly the same way as Duwweltjie, Brandnetel offers a wonderfully palatable lesson in appreciating differing terroir, bringing forward a more linear expression that ends with a slight saltiness achieved from the mineral-rich soils.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
