Description

The 2024 Macclesfield Pinot marks a new single vineyard addition to The Wanderer lineup – and it’s a beauty.

Grown in the cooler reaches of the Upper Yarra, this is MV6 clone Pinot from red volcanic soils, sitting at 250m with a northerly tilt. It’s a low-intervention approach: hand-picked, 100% destemmed but not crushed, with wild fermentation in open fermenters and a long 11-month rest in seasoned large format French oak. No fining, no filtration, just estate-bottled purity.

It’s a fine-boned, quietly complex Yarra Pinot that leans savoury – cranberry, red cherry, a little leaf and spice. Tight and coiled on release, with enough structure to suggest this’ll be even better with a bit of time under cork. A serious debut from a seriously thoughtful producer.

"It’s in the spicy-and-insistent style with leaf matter, red cherry, cranberry and strawberry characters sheeting through."
- Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

93+ points - "All this wine needs is a few extra years under its belt. It’s in the spicy-and-insistent style with leaf matter, red cherry, cranberry and strawberry characters sheeting through. There are undergrowth and dried herb notes too. It holds onto the finish at moment but in time it will relax and show its full wares. I’d reckon that this is pretty damn good." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

The Wanderer

The Wanderer is Andrew Marks’ personal venture, allowing him to step beyond his family’s Gembrook Hill vineyard to craft wines that reflect his deep winemaking experience. Raised at Gembrook Hill, one of the Yarra Valley’s pioneering vineyards, Andrew’s path was shaped by early exposure to viticulture and formal training at the University of Adelaide. His work at Penfolds, along with vintages in France and Spain, honed his ability to blend traditional techniques with a modern, thoughtful approach.

Under The Wanderer label, Andrew produces wines that express the unique character of each vineyard with minimal intervention. His delicate Pinot Noir, refined Chardonnay, and Rhone-inspired Syrah showcase finesse and precision, capturing the natural nuances of the fruit. These wines are all about subtlety and complexity, evolving naturally over time to reveal their layers.

Produced in small quantities, The Wanderer wines are highly sought after and known to sell out quickly. Each limited release reflects Andrew’s journey and his dedication to crafting wines that tell a story—of place, of vintage, and of his evolution as a winemaker. For those who appreciate elegance and nuance, The Wanderer offers something truly special, albeit fleeting.
