Description

Please be aware this is a Pre-Release Offer for VIP Customers. Stocks of 2024 Coleraine will be dispatched from Wednesday 25th February.

Coleraine is New Zealand's greatest red wine. It has a track record that no other producer in the country can match, and the 2024 release only solidifies that standing.

This vintage was defined by a warm, dry season which resulted in small bunches and low yields. That translates directly to concentration. The blend is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc, producing a wine that is powerful but precise.

Gary Walsh compares the depth here to the legendary 2020 vintage, but with the fresh "acid cut" of the 2021. It is a deep, structural wine marked by black fruit, ironstone, graphite and cedar. It is savoury, serious, and built for the long haul.

Due to low yields in 2024, our allocation is down by 40% this year. Sam Kim has already awarded it a perfect 100 points. It is a masterpiece of New Zealand winemaking.

"An exceptional wine. It will keep, probably, for as long as you want to keep it, if you can keep your hands off it, that is."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

98 points - "The iconic blend of 58/31/11% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc. Tiny berries in '24, destemmed, 30 days' maceration, matured in French oak, 70% new, for 20 months. Deep magenta/crimson with enticing aromas of pure blackberry, damson plum, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits over hints of fine spice, dried tobacco, pencil case, crème de cassis, gentle crushed meadow herbs, violets, cocoa nibs, cedar, vanilla bean and earth. Such an elegant, graceful presentation of ripe black fruits on the palate, slender and supple, layered and kinetic. This has superfine powdered-gravel tannins and a finish that seems to roll forever. A classic from a superb vintage, this is just a no-brainer and a wine that sits right at the top of the New Zealand fine-wine hierarchy." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

100 points - "This is a masterpiece, much like a great work of art. The bouquet shows cassis, dark plum, bouquet garni, baking spice, rich floral, and cedar characters. It’s concentrated with exceptional depth and mouth-coating texture, wonderfully framed by finely polished tannins. It’s perfectly proportioned and gracefully powerful, combining scintillating fruit purity with seductive complexity. The wine flows seamlessly to a persistent, structured finish. $175.00." - Sam Kim (Wine Orbit)

98 points - "Superlative balance. Aromas of blackberries, currants, blueberries, graphite and dark tobacco with hints of bark, violets and licorice. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine velvety tannins and a seamless, cashmere texture. so caressing and polished. Bright and vivid at the end." - James Suckling (James Suckling)

98 points - "Deep and bright, bold purple-red colour; fabulous cranberry, violet and cassis aromas, the fruit bursting from the glass. The same flavours saturate the palate which is beautifuly balanced by abundant fine-grained tannins that run the full length of the palate and provide a very long lasting and resonant farewell. Oak is so well handled as to be only just perceptible, adding to the cedary touches. An utterly delicious cabernet blend and a top vintage of this wine." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

97 points - "This is 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc. 55% new oak. This vintage puts me in mind of the mighty 2020; that sort of depth and concentration, though it has some of the acid cut of 2021 in the mix too. Winemaker Phil Brodie says 2024 was a dry vintage, and warm too, with small bunches and lower crop levels. Said it could have gone too ripe, but they walked through the vineyards on a daily basis, tasting and testing, and they picked it when they thought it was just right. When I think about NZ wine, at the top of the tree, I have Kumeu for Chardonnay, Bilancia for Shiraz (and sometimes Chardonnay!), and Te Mata for Cabernet. A trio of meticulous producers who regularly deliver that little bit extra. The one percenters, if you like. Deep dark wine, black and red fruit, chocolate and ironstone, some creamy and spicy cedar oak, dried flowers, a light minty perfume, slight roasted red capsicum and pimento. It’s medium to full-bodied, crisp ‘mineral’ acidity, lavish graphite tannin, tobacco and nori, a fresh blackberry nip to it, brooding and ferrous, with a firm and savoury finish of superb length. An exceptional wine. It will keep, probably, for as long as you want to keep it, if you can keep your hands off it, that is." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

beautiful

it’s beautiful, but in an offbeat way. Quiet and complex. Lots of cedar yet not heavy, slightly smoky, a little brooding but plenty of fruit too.
I bought one to try young, but the second won’t be opened for five years yet. I expect things to be integrated and rounded then.

A big beautiful wine

Amazing cab merlot. However, I found it a little too complex for my palate.

Lots of layering of flavours. Tobacco plus a sweetness to it

Amazing but needs time

Picked up a bottle of this to try now, but it's going to need a good 10 years at least to hit its strides..

Te Mata Estate has one of the richest winemaking histories in all of New Zealand.

With vineyards planted back as far as 1896, the rich history of this iconic Hawke's Bay producer is enviable in the relatively young NZ wine landscape.

Their wines come exclusively from carefully selected sites across Hawke's Bay. The aim to craft classic, structural wines that are comparable to the very best the world has to offer.

The Te Mata Estate Coleraine is considered by many as NZ's premier Bordeaux blend. A shining jewel in the crown of the Hawke's Bay region.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
