Description

The Merricks subregion has always been central to Stonier’s story, and under Julian Grounds it’s finding a fresh rhythm. This new Chardonnay comes from three estate vineyards along Thompsons Lane, where old vines sit on red volcanic soils and take in the cool, salty air from Western Port Bay.

The 2024 vintage is a reminder of why this corner of the Peninsula is so highly regarded for Chardonnay. The wine is lifted and perfumed – lavender, lemon blossom and a flicker of ginger flower – before rolling into citrus, white peach and a gentle seasoning of oak spice. A touch of lees gives it a creamy edge, but the line of acidity keeps everything bright and long. It’s elegant, layered, and confident without being showy.

As with the Merricks Pinot, this bottling marks a new era for Stonier. Production is small, detail is everything, and the focus is squarely on letting site and season do the talking. It’s already been greeted with strong reviews (95 points from Jane Faulkner, 95 points from Campbell Mattinson) and looks set to age gracefully for close to a decade.

Such beautiful line and length. Some pebble, hay and sandalwood characters here, florals, flashes of sunny peach, green olive, the stones of stonefruit, some tonic. Beautiful management of acidity, texture and flavour, with everything flowing out evenly through the finish. So much elegance and length. Amazing g&t aromatics and indeed flavours. This is a lovely wine in all respects.

As with the Merricks pinot noir, this takes fruit off the three disparate sites along Thompsons Lane. It's highly perfumed with lavender, lemon blossom and ginger flower, too. The palate is layered, textural and feels flush with citrus and white stone fruit, ginger and cedary oak spice (not much, just enough as a seasoning). A light layer of lees adds a creaminess and the fine acidity drives this to a long finish.

The first bottling of Merricks Chardonnay under Julian Grounds guiding eye. A blend from three vineyards within the estate, with elevation. Wild ferment, no battonage, partial malo and into French puncheons of which 20% is new. Some delicate grated nutmeg and birch bark greets the grapefruit and white peach tones. The traces of oak also bring out the dainty white florals. Acidity climbs steadily whilst allowing for nougatine creaminess. This bottling is amping up those richer and more textural components that sit neatly beside buttery sauces and meaty shellfish so well. It is sexy and it knows it, beautiful sipping today and will age well over 8-10 years in the dark parts of your cellar.

Merricks CHardonnay is a blend of our best vineyards in the Merricks sub region. The vineyards are all cool maritime sites planted on our red volcanic soil, running up the ridge behind the winery. Moderate to high elevation (100m - 140m) and average vine age close to 40 years.
