Description

Winemaker Joe Holyman has never shied away from a challenge, and over the years has constantly grown his range of wines.

A few years ago they heard about a former cyclist on the North-West Coast of the Apple Isle growing Savagnin. Intrigued, Joe and his wife Lou, drove up, had a look, and convinced him to sell them some fruit. This isn’t the ullaged style of the Jura, but still Savagnin in character, something that always stands apart from the minerally whites we’re so used to seeing here in Aus.

Savoury and saline, there is nice tart fruit on the nose, some, as expected, tight acidity, yet all the while, textured and quite moreish on the palate.

"Apricot, grapefruit, a gin and tonic with a slice of lime thing, ginger and spice. It’s a fleshy wine, saline and savoury, with a good cut of citrus acidity, chalk dust texture, a sort of honeyed richness too, nectarine and lemon peel on a finish of good length, albeit slightly warm. It offers full flavour and a point of difference. Very good."

It hasn’t been through malo so it has some biting acidity, but the fruit on the palate carries it well. We knew we were onto a good thing when our 15 year old son told us that the grapes smelt like fish and taste a bit salty.

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
