Description

Stoney Rise has built a reputation for making some of Tasmania’s most approachable Pinots, and the 2024 carries on that tradition. Joe Holyman keeps the style vibrant and expressive, showing off the Tamar Valley’s cool-climate fruit without getting too serious about it.

The fruit is drawn from the estate vineyard and a handful of local growers, with plenty of clones in the mix to add complexity. In the winery it’s all about keeping things fresh – gentle handling, minimal new oak, and a focus on drinkability over weight. The result is a Pinot that’s bright and fragrant, with juicy red fruits, subtle spice and fine tannins that make it glide across the palate.

It’s a wine that works just as well with food as it does on its own, and part of the charm is that it doesn’t try too hard – it’s simply a delicious, honest expression of Tasmanian Pinot that consistently over-delivers for the price.

Dark cherry, baked plums, spice, a little mint, with dried herbs and earth. It’s flavoursome, but kind of stony with fine graphite tannin, a subtle beetroot earthiness, empty chocolate box, some orange zest and amaro, with a cocoa and dry grainy finish of good length. It’s a darker and more forceful vintage of this wine, but it does have a fair bit of X-factor

    One of Tassie's best!

Beautifully bright in colour - and goes down far too easily. This is one of my favourite pinot noirs at this (great) price point, and one of Tassie's best!

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
