Joe Holyman's delightfully textural small-batch Gruner Veltliner. Only a tiny amount makes it outside of cellar door.

Description

There's only a small planting of Gruner Veltliner on the Stoney Rise vineyard.

Joe Holyman loves the variety for its interesting texture and versatility with a range of foods. This wine is seldom seen outside of cellar door, you'd usually need to take a trip to Joe and Lou's place in order to try it.

If you're looking for serious Australian examples of this intriguing Austrian variety, you should absolutely give this a go.

"Salted almonds, ginger and lemon peel tea, white pepper, good chicken stock umami character, lime and honey. It’s saline, nutty, has something of lemon and lime pie richness, green olive, dusty peppery texture, with a bright and long finish, featuring a mint and dried flower perfume. Lots of energy and crunch. So present in the glass. Delightful."

"Light straw with aromas of Meyer lemon, nashi pear, citrus fruits, blanched almonds, pressed wildflowers, white flowers, almond meal, just a whiff of distant white pepper and crushed stone. Super slinky and textural with a bright, singular minerally line and great length of flavour as the wine slowly fades away."

    This was a great wine

    Very tasty, textural wine

Aromas and flavours of almond, Granny Smith and white pepper. The palate has a mealy edge to it from the stirring of the lees, with the apple and hints of citrus showing through. Texture is the name of the game, and this wine has plenty.

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
