Description

Joe Holyman is one of Tasmania's best Chardonnay producers.

His Holyman Chardonnay is one of the most collectable in the country these days. With the Stoney Rise, you get his signature style at a fraction of the price.

The flavours here sit in the cooler end of the spectrum. It's a Chardonnay with lovely lively acidity and easy drinkability.

Dollar for dollar, this is very good buying for any Tasmanian Chardonnay fans.

"Coal River Valley chardonnay. Light straw in the glass with inviting aromas of white peach, nectarine and citrus with hints of soft spice, white flowers, oatmeal, crushed stone, nougat, clotted cream and a wisp of struck flint. A picture of clarity and tension with a swoop of pithy texture, a mealy tide slowly retreating and some lovely grapefruit pith notes as the wine retreats." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

"This has a bit more flavour than is usual, and the acidity seems a bit keener too, and really drives the wine along. There’s white peach, green apple, a saline edge, a flicker of aniseed and spice, along with some oatmeal savoury stuff and samphire. Sports some grapefruit and lemon peel on a finish of intensity and excellent length. Even as a young wine it offers complexity and no shortage of interest, though I reckon it may be better again with another year or two in bottle. Very good."

Very average Chardonnay. It has 2 flavour profiles dominating, dried apricot and cut-grass sav Blanc combination…. These profiles, which aren't my favourite can't handle the new oak, because there is not sufficient acidity from citrus flavours in the middle palette, so its not a well balanced wine. It tastes like more like a warm climate Grigio.

There is some cashew and nectarine on the nose. The palate is full and fresh. It undergoes no malolactic conversion, and so has zingy acidity that drives the wine through your mouth. The finish is long and tight.

Stoney Rise

Stoney Rise is a small winery in Tasmania's Tamar Valley that has a huge reputation.

Winemaker Joe & Lou Holyman purchased the property in 2004, a picturesque site planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1986.

Since then, they have developed a keen following, producing some of the most stunning Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the Apple Isle. Interestingly, they also have a little Gruner Veltliner and Trousseau in the ground adding a little colour to their range.

These wines fly off the shelves. And no wonder, they are right at the top of the pile in terms of quality in Tasmania at the moment, with demand far outstripping their small production each year.
