Description

Soalheiro is the name that put Melgaço Alvarinho on the map, and Primeiras Vinhas is where it all started. The core of this wine comes from the family's very first vines, planted in 1974 by João António Cerdeira in Portugal's far north, right up against the Spanish border.

These days the original plot is joined by old-vine parcels from Monção and Melgaço, tended by the growers in Soalheiro's Viticulturists Club. It's as much about keeping those old vines in the ground as it is about making a great wine. Mountains shelter the area from the Atlantic, so you get enough sun to ripen Alvarinho properly without losing the bright, salty edge.

The 2024 was hand-picked, gently whole-bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeasts, mostly in steel. Around 15% went into old barrels, a foudre and a big cask for texture. No malolactic, and plenty of time on lees with stirring. The result is crisp and taut: green apple and pear, a fresh fern note, a chalky dry finish and real salinity. Grilled sardines, prawns off the barbie or a plate of salt cod fritters would all suit it.

It's lovely now, but this is Alvarinho with the stuffing to age, and the producer reckons 8 to 15 years. Old vines, a serious pedigree and a big hit of refreshment - a benchmark here for the grape.

"This dials up the salinity, the tension, the mouth-watering freshness and rapier-like thrust of flavour... Fabulous wine, ultra refreshment factor."
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

"I love the purity and crystalline character of this cuvée... It should develop nicely in bottle."

94 points - "Some of the wine ages in foudre. From an original planting, and an adjacent, significant growers. Importer: Alimentaria This dials up the salinity, the tension, the mouth-watering freshness and rapier-like thrust of flavour. Incredibly vibrant, crunchy green apple, crunchy green pear, almost a green strawberry thing happening and wet fern notes in there too. Fabulous wine, ultra refreshment factor." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

94 points - "The 2024 Primeiras Vinhas was produced with Alvarinho from the first family vineyard they planted in 1974. The whole clusters were pressed softly, and the juice fermented with indigenous yeasts mostly (85%) in stainless steel, used barriques and a 5,000-liter oak vat and 2,000-liter oak foudres, without malolactic and with extended contact with the fine lees. I love the purity and crystalline character of this cuvée. It's still young and undeveloped, with the baby fat that needs to be rendered out by some time in bottle. But it shows incipient complexity, slowly unfurling layers of aromas and a serious, dry and chalky palate. It has 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.17 and 6.9 grams of acidity. It should develop nicely in bottle. 33,461 bottles, 300 magnums and 100 double magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2025." - Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate)

Introduction
Primeiras Vinhas was born from the vineyard plot that gave origin to Soalheiro, our first vines planted in 1974. Today, this wine also integrates a selection of old vines from Monção and Melgaço, cared for by the families who are part of our Viticulturists Club. More than an icon of Soalheiro, it represents our commitment to preserving the old vines of our territory.

Terroir
The microclimate of Monção and Melgaço, the northernmost wine region in Portugal, offers unique conditions for the maturation of the Alvarinho grape variety. Protected by a surrounding mountain range, this region benefits from a perfect balance between rainfall, temperature and sun exposure.

Vinification
The grapes from these old vines are hand-harvested. Fermentation takes place mainly in stainless steel, with around 15% of the wine fermented in oak vessels, including used barrels, a foudre and a large cask, adding further complexity to the final blend. The wine ages on fine lees with bâtonnage, gaining structure and depth before resting for around 6 months prior to bottling.

Ageing Potential
Over time, the wine develops greater aromatic complexity and depth while maintaining freshness and balance. Under proper cellaring conditions, it has an ageing potential of between 8 and 15 years.

Food Pairing Suggestion
Pairs very well with seafood, all types of fish, white meat, cured cheese, smoked meat and Asian or Mediterranean cuisine.

Soalheiro

Soalheiro has spent more than four decades exploring just how good Portuguese Alvarinho can be. Based in Melgaço, near the Spanish border, it produces vibrant whites, textured wines built to age and sparkling Alvarinho.

In 1974, João António Cerdeira and his family planted Melgaço’s first vineyard dedicated entirely to Alvarinho. Experiments in the family garage followed, with the car making way for barrels and the first Soalheiro released in 1982.

Mountains shelter Monção e Melgaço from the Atlantic, while warm days, cool nights and granite soils help deliver ripe flavour with bright acidity. That combination gives the wines their generosity and freshness.

The family’s vineyards have been certified organic since 2006, complemented by fruit from a community of local growers. Their small plots span different elevations and exposures, giving the team plenty of vineyard diversity to explore.

Old vines, mountain sites, barrel fermentation and extended ageing each reveal another side of the grape, making this one of the most exciting explorations of Alvarinho in Portugal.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
