Description

Tom and Nadège Carson’s Serrat has become one of the most exciting small producers in the Yarra Valley, and the Shiraz Viognier is the estate’s signature. From their insanely close-planted vineyard near Yarra Glen, this is a wine inspired by Côte-Rôtie but firmly grounded in Yarra elegance.

The Shiraz vines, planted in 2003 to the revered Best’s Old Block and Barossa 1654 clones, are co-fermented with a small splash of Viognier from cuttings with a legendary backstory — sourced via Yarra Yering, and originally traced to Condrieu’s Château Grillet in the 1960s. The result is a wine of astonishing perfume and presence.

The 2024 release is drenched in dark cherry, blackberry and plum, with lifted violet, graphite and Asian spice notes that tumble out of the glass. The palate is deep and concentrated, yet the tannins are impossibly silky, carrying all that fruit with finesse. It’s powerful without ever being heavy, laced with florals and savoury detail, finishing long and composed.

Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion) was emphatic, awarding 98 points and calling it “brooding and complex… simultaneously concentrated, silky and beautifully structured… destined to age gracefully over the next decade or more.”

This is one of Australia’s great modern Shiraz Viogniers -  expressive, collectible, and utterly compelling.

"Best’s old-block clone (70%) and BVRC15 clone (30%). 5% whole bunches; co-fermented with 5% viognier. Matured in 500L French oak (25% new). A deep, bright purple. Brooding and complex with aromas of black cherry, graphite, black pepper and dark licorice scents. You can add some subtle, oak-derived pencil shavings and crushed violets to the mix, too! On the palate, this is simultaneously concentrated, silky and beautifully structured. An alluring and altogether lovely wine that is destined to age gracefully over the next decade or more."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

This wine is from the Shiraz block planted in 2003 with Viognier from the original 2001 plantings. There are two clones in the block, Best’s Old Block sourced from the original plantings at Best’s Great Western planted in 1868 and clone 1654, a Barossa selection. The Viognier is from cuttings at Yarra Yering, that l cut personally in 2000, Dr Carodus told me he had personally taken them from Chateau Grillet in Condrieu in the 60’s. Highly illegal at the time and even more so now.

This is another expressive and concentrated Shiraz Viognier from us, following on from 23, it has loads of black and darker red fruits and a violet fragrance and spicy note that is so alluring. The fruit intensity is remarkable coupled with the silkiest of tannins. It’s just loaded with fruit and florals and complex Asian spices.

The dry warm summer adding concentration and depth.
