2024 Phase Three Wines Dero Syrah

Phase Three’s Dero is Barossa Syrah done their way – tiny volumes, old-vine sites, a bit of Cabernet in the mix, and a whole lot of character packed into the bottle.

Description

Now in its fourth release, the Dero Syrah has become the headline act for Ben Kelley and his family’s Phase Three project. The name and the packaging are a nod to Phase Three's scrappy start in the Barossa, where the family started their wine journey on a shoestring budget.

The idea for the wine is simple – take fruit from some of the Barossa and Eden Valley’s best old sites and blend them into something that feels both powerful and finely cut. In 2024 that meant just four barrels, gravity transferred together and bottled without fining or filtration. Only 1,250 bottles made – the smallest run so far.

The sites read like a roll call of the Valley: Hoffmann’s Wolf Block, Vinegarden (planted in 1895), Burley Hillside, Wilton Hill “Old Gold Field Block” and the “Old Musty” block, where century-old Cabernet vines were grafted to Shiraz years ago. One barrique even included a co-ferment of Syrah and Cabernet from that site, and it makes up around 40% of the final blend.

The wine sits at just 12.8% alcohol, reflecting a cooler, slower season. It’s fragrant, structured and fresh, with Syrah’s lift and Cabernet’s grip working neatly together.

Unmistakably Barossa but something truly unique.  Extremely limited.

"Don't get it twisted. The name Dero is certainly not intended to make fun of or upset anyone. We started here from scratch! It’s simply our four best available barrels splashed together via a gentle gravity transfer. In our opinion, it’s a structured, elegant wine with class & character..."
- Winemaker Ben Kelley

    Incredible. Totally worth the price

The packaging may not fiat your boat, but this wine is quality all the way through. Surprised by how complete a drink this is. Love it. Bought more.

Cannot argue with the Gary Walsh review. Get on it while stocks last. Only 1500 bottles made

This release is pure Eden/Flaxman Valley at its core wrapped in some Hoffmann Old Vines. This cuvee has an average vine age of over 70 years. Truth be told. The "Old Musty" site is 100+ year old Cabernet that was grafted to Shiraz some years ago. Over the years a little Cabernet has crept its way onto the wire. This blend contains the single Barrique from the latter "B pick" from “Old Musty.” This particular Barrique was approximately a 60% Syrah 40% Cabernet, whole bunch & co fermented.

The 24 Dero release consists of the following sites:

Burley 'Hillside'

Wilton Hill "The Old Gold Field Block"

Wilton Hill "Old Musty"

Vinegarden circa 1895

Hoffmann Wolf's Block

All whole cluster fermentations from tiny yields picked at various ripening stages. Basket Pressed & Bottles Unfined & Unfiltered. This vintage blending this was a breeze. It’s simply our four best available barrels splashed together via a gentle gravity transfer.

In our opinion, it’s a structured, elegant wine with class & character that probably doesn't deserve to be jammed into a brown paper bag and called Dero!
