Now in its fourth release, the Dero Syrah has become the headline act for Ben Kelley and his family’s Phase Three project. The name and the packaging are a nod to Phase Three's scrappy start in the Barossa, where the family started their wine journey on a shoestring budget.
The idea for the wine is simple – take fruit from some of the Barossa and Eden Valley’s best old sites and blend them into something that feels both powerful and finely cut. In 2024 that meant just four barrels, gravity transferred together and bottled without fining or filtration. Only 1,250 bottles made – the smallest run so far.
The sites read like a roll call of the Valley: Hoffmann’s Wolf Block, Vinegarden (planted in 1895), Burley Hillside, Wilton Hill “Old Gold Field Block” and the “Old Musty” block, where century-old Cabernet vines were grafted to Shiraz years ago. One barrique even included a co-ferment of Syrah and Cabernet from that site, and it makes up around 40% of the final blend.
The wine sits at just 12.8% alcohol, reflecting a cooler, slower season. It’s fragrant, structured and fresh, with Syrah’s lift and Cabernet’s grip working neatly together.
Unmistakably Barossa but something truly unique. Extremely limited.
"Don't get it twisted. The name Dero is certainly not intended to make fun of or upset anyone. We started here from scratch! It’s simply our four best available barrels splashed together via a gentle gravity transfer. In our opinion, it’s a structured, elegant wine with class & character..."
