Description

Planted back in the early ’80s just outside Warragul, Bull Swamp is one of the oldest Chardonnay sites in Gippsland - and it’s where Pat Sullivan gets his richest, most generous fruit. The north-facing vines soak up plenty of sun, the deep volcanic soils run fat with energy, and the resulting wine walks that fine line between power and poise.

It’s plush and mouth-filling, but there’s still a zip of acidity, a lick of minerality, and that subtle chalky grip Pat’s fans have come to love. Made with the same light touch as the rest of his range - wild ferment, old oak, no fining or filtration - it’s a wine that reflects the site more than the hand.

Bull Swamp might sit lower on the slope than Ada River, but in terms of flavour and presence, it brings serious elevation.

"...the palate refined and intense, seamless and energetic with a laser-beam focus, an impression of richness and a long-lasting finish. Mouth-watering aftertaste. Utterly delicious chardonnay."
- Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

"While there’s plenty of texture and opulence this vintage, there’s also detail and a certain succulence... It’s luscious without being heavy and the acidity ensures the finish is as long as it is refreshing. An outstanding drink."
- Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

"The wine is rich; a feast of salted/crushed nuts, plump creamy texture and an attractive phenolic tension through the finish. This is a lovely wine, detailed and delicious... This comes recommended."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

"This is a flavour town style of Chardonnay... It’s a juicy affair, a big burst of almost tropical richness, but also has a grapefruit and fresh pineapple cut to acidity, flinty and chalky grip, with a bold, intense and fruity finish of excellent length."
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

96 points - "Medium-full yellow colour; a touch of grassiness at first sniff, then lemon, grapefruit and verbena, the palate refined and intense, seamless and energetic with a laser-beam focus, an impression of richness and a long-lasting finish. Mouth-watering aftertaste. Utterly delicious chardonnay." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

96 points - "While there’s plenty of texture and opulence this vintage, there’s also detail and a certain succulence. Expect white nectarine and lemon/grapefruit, lemon balm, daikon and lots of delicious savoury elements: creamy lees, spicy oak and ginger cream. It’s luscious without being heavy and the acidity ensures the finish is as long as it is refreshing. An outstanding drink." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - "The 2024 Bull Swamp Chardonnay leads with lanolin and white flowers, dried fennel seeds, ginger root, lemon pith and lantana. The wine is rich; a feast of salted/crushed nuts, plump creamy texture and an attractive phenolic tension through the finish. This is a lovely wine, detailed and delicious. The acidity is a highlight—penetrating and sapid. It will be better in a year or two. This comes recommended. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

94 points - "This is a flavour town style of Chardonnay. Apple, stone fruit, minted cream, ginger, green chilli and assorted spice. It’s a juicy affair, a big burst of almost tropical richness, but also has a grapefruit and fresh pineapple cut to acidity, flinty and chalky grip, with a bold, intense and fruity finish of excellent length. It’s quite a lot of wine, though it’s also very good. Needs a little more time to settle. Calm your farm Bull Swamp; you’re a bit of a crazy puppy at a now." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

94 points - "Located just outside of the town of Warragul, the dry grown Bull Swamp vineyard was planted in 1982 to deep and rich volcanic soils. The fruit for this wine comes from a north facing aspect of the site. It was barrel fermented before full malo and elevage in barrique for eleven months with 30% new. It’s nutty and saline on first look with hazelnut and fino sherry-like raw almond notes kick things off, followed by bread dough, pickled vegetables and yuzu citrus. A good swirl of the glass releases cinnamon apple and a glimmer of clotted cream. There’s a reticence here, with a coaxing required at this young age, but it’s very good. The palate, however, is more generous and juicy while retaining detail and filling the mouth with poached apple, pineapple husk, yuzu, subtle salinity, hazelnut, pastry dough and bosc pear before a fine sheath gently grainy phenolics and good saline acidity draw length. There’s some attractive nuttiness in the mouth perfume, and the aforementioned length is assured and considerable. Another of Patrick’s 2024 Chardonnays that seems to take you on a journey from first smell to final sip. Delicious." - Tom Kline (Wine Pilot)

    Wonderful wine

A brilliant wine maker. This is a beautiful Chardonnay.

As good as any in Australia

My palate prefers the Ada river (same maker) but it is a close call . I love the minerality.

Looking forward to trying his other wines.

    Really excited!

    Love it.

    Very high standard cool-climate chardonnay

I was a bit blown away by this chardonnay, as well as it's sister 'Ada River' chardonnay. Superb example of cool climate chardonnay, with a cool austerity, perfect acidic poise and tension.

The Bull Swamp vineyard was planted in 1982 by the Farrington family in the early 1980s on the very edge of the Warragul township. The Bull Swamp Chardonnay comes from the oldest plantings of P58 clone on a north-facing aspect of the site. Deep rich volcanic soils nourish what are dry grown grape vines. Elevation is 100m and this section of the vineyard receives the least amount of airflow relative to our other sites. The northerly aspect provides full sunlight and exposure resulting in powerful, rich fruit.

Pristine citrus and orchard fruits balance a weighty but vibrant texture. A long saline mineral finish adds refined complexity and a distinctive sense of place.

Patrick Sullivan

The wild-haired Patrick Sullivan is a farmer first, a winemaker second.

His pride and joy is his vineyard in the Strzelecki Ranges in the Gippsland G.I. of Victoria. On this plot of land, Pat farms with organic principals alongside Bill Downie, one of the most revolutionary winemakers of his generation.

Bill takes the Pinot Noir from the vineyard, Pat takes the Chardonnay. The Chardonnay wines emerging from his cellar are some of the most exciting in the country. Addicted to volcanic soils and the power and energy that those soils bring to Chardonnay, Pat is amassing a formidable stable of Chardonnays that articulate a small slice of Australia's ancient terroir.

The wines are un-tinkered with, fermented in neutral vessels with little or no sulphur and are made to express their special site and the vagaries of vintage. In Pat's words, "The wines are inspired by emotion, a moment in time and a sense of place."
