Description

This wine had always been a special collaboration between two of Basket Range's favourites, Ochota Barrels and Gentle Folk.

Originally dreamed up by Taras Ochota and Gareth Belton, the 'Fathers Milk' is kept alive today by Amber Ochota and Taras' father Ari with Gareth, continuing the ritual of making great wine over a long lunch. It is a 50/50 split of Gamay and Pinot Noir, born from a tiny harvest in the Adelaide Hills where these were the last two vineyards picked.

The fruit comes from two high-altitude sites - Sam Virgara’s Gamay block in Piccadilly and the Monomeith Pinot Noir vineyard in Ashton. It was all tipped into an open fermenter as 100% whole bunches and foot-stomped by the kids. After two weeks of daily stomping (and tasting), it was basket pressed to just two neutral French oak barrels where it rested for 13 months.

The cool 2024 vintage has given it a distinct amaro-like spice to go with the soft red fruit profile. It's light, juicy and carries with surprising grip and structure. With only 880 bottles produced, it is a rare bird.

    beautiful taste, great wine maker

Ochota Barrels x Gentle Folk

Gamay- Pinot noir

No changes in the make up of the 2024 wine with another tiny harvest in the Adelaide Hills. These two vineyards are the last harvested at both wineries from the Piccadilly Valley, and it seemed most appropriate to combine what we picked and have a nice family lunch. Whole bunches, neutral oak and a cool vintage resulted in a wine with a spice, amaro, soft red fruit and life energy pairing beautifully with food on the table and family by your side.

Vineyard: Virgara, Piccadilly Gamay/ Monomeith, Ashton Pinot noir

Elevation: 520m Virgara/ 530m Monomeith

Vinification: Over a very long lunch, 100% whole bunches were tipped into an open top fermenter and foot-stomped by small children. After two weeks of tasting and daily foot-stomping, the wine was basket pressed to two neutral French oak barrels, followed by lunch. The wine was in oak for 13 months before being bottled, followed by another great lunch. Just the way we always imagined it.

Gentle Folk

Gareth and Rainbo Belton are the Gentle Folks, both in name and in sensibility. They are gentle, soulful people, both originally seaweed experts, who turned their hands to farming grapes with an organic and sustainable approach. Today they are crafting some of the most legitimately exciting and exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Adelaide Hills and are firmly rooted in the upper echelon of Australia's lo-fi wine scene.

Their wines cover multiple sub-regions across the Adelaide Hills. There are no additions during the winemaking process, save for a splash of SO2 at bottling to keep the wines pristine as they travel from the Beltons' home to yours. The worlds of fine wine and natural wine collide in the Gentle Folk range. They are beautiful people making increasingly breathtaking wines that you definitely want to check out.
