Description

If Julian Langworthy's famed Forrest Vineyard Chardonnay is all about raw power and muscle, the Wilson Vineyard is its elegant, finely tuned counterpart. This is only the second time Julian has released a Single Vineyard wine from this site, and it perfectly highlights the incredible, contrasting diversity of Margaret River's terroir.

Sourced from a tiny, two-hectare block tucked further inland within the Wallcliffe sub-region, the vines here sit on a north-facing slope. Jules says that this specific site delivers a "raw beauty" and a compelling purity of fruit that is entirely distinct from his coastal vineyards.

Hand-picked in early February and chilled overnight, the fruit was whole-bunch pressed directly into a mix of new (20%) and seasoned puncheons without any settling or fining. A spontaneous wild fermentation kicked off a few days later, and the wine was then left to rest on its gross lees, unsulphured, until September to build vital texture and complexity.

The 2024 is a Chardonnay of striking finesse. It is bright, finely detailed, and completely captivating, leaning into coastal freshness and linear drive rather than sheer weight.

A quick warning: production here was minuscule. With only 112 six-packs made, our allocation is painfully small, and this will disappear in a flash.

“There’s enough funk in this to get a party started. It’s so lively and racy thanks to the acidity.”

“This is really good. The wine comes from a hot year and a cool site slightly south of Margaret River town, with careful handling of the fruit and style parameters.”
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - “There’s enough funk in this to get a party started. It’s so lively and racy thanks to the acidity. Tight and linear but certainly not lean as there’s plenty of flavour, with mouth-watering sulphides, lemon-lime juice and zest, pink grapefruit and a feathering of nutty lees and spicy oak layering the palate.” - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - “This lovely, supple, subtle wine, while being just that, still has trademark Margaret River fruit weight and drive. Think blossom, white nectarine, purity all wrapped in a Nocturne Chardonnay mineral blanket. Generous, flashy yet restrained with a touch of the 2024 sun. Mineral-edged aromas of lemon zest, grapefruit, struck match, sea spray, wet stones and nectarines. The textural, refined palate shows bright acidity and real tension beneath controlled power. Great purity. Drink or hold. Screw cap.” - Ryan Montgomery (jamessuckling.com)

96 points - “The 2024 Wilson Vineyard Chardonnay is piercing and salty, with white peach and lemon balm, green apple and honeydew melon. The acidity punctuates the palate, giving a particularly precise, incisive and penetrating quality that is both salivating and moorish. This is really good. The wine comes from a hot year and a cool site slightly south of Margaret River town, with careful handling of the fruit and style parameters. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.” - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

While I have been taking this fruit in for a while, this is only the second release. What I find compelling is a certain raw beauty in its purity. Unlike Forrest Vineyard, which relies on raw power, Wilson Vineyard boasts a fruit purity that is both subtle and compelling at the same time. It’s amazing to me, the contrasting natures of the unique and wonderful sites we have in Margaret River that, really, we are just getting to grips with.

The fruit is from a single site in the Walcliffe sub-region, but further from the coast, inland from the township. The Chardonnay block is again pretty tiny, with only 2 hectares planted. The plantings are oriented east-west, with a slight northerly aspect to the slope. This tiny four-tonne batch is a handpicked selection from the top of this slope. The fruit was harvested on 3rd February, chilled overnight and pressed as bunches into a selection of new, one- and two-year-old puncheons, with no settling or fining processes. This juice was then carefully monitored, and spontaneous fermentation kicked off on day three after pressing. After a three-week ferment, the wine remained on gross lees unsulphured until September of that year. In December, the wine was emptied from barrel, settled, filtered and bottled. The final blend saw around 20% new oak.

This lovely, supple, subtle wine, while being just that, still has trademark Margaret River fruit weight and drive. Think blossom, white nectarine, purity all wrapped in a Nocturne Chardonnay mineral blanket.
