Description

Nick Spencer has been championing Tumbarumba Chardonnay for two decades now, and the 2024 release shows exactly why he’s so committed to this high-country region.

The fruit comes from a unique vineyard in the Maragle Valley, sitting unusually low for Tumbarumba at 500 metres, but close enough to the Snowy Mountains to feel the chill each night as mountain air rushes through. Warm days, cold nights – it’s a recipe for flavour and freshness in perfect balance.

2024 was a standout season here, delivering fruit with richness and intensity without tipping into heaviness. Nick hand-picked and pressed the grapes into a mix of French oak puncheons and amphora, where the wine rested for 14 months on lees. It’s a style that gives depth and texture but keeps everything finely tuned.

This is Chardonnay with drive and personality – elegant but not shy – and a wine that will sit comfortably at the table now while also rewarding a few years in the cellar. Another strong reminder of why Nick is one of NSW’s leading voices for cool-climate wines.

"A wine that not only marks 20 vintages of Chardonnay from this incredible region for me personally, but may well be one of the finest expressions we’ve ever produced."

Expect an amalgam of lavender, lime curd, stone fruit, citrus, toffee brittle studded with roasted almonds and lots of spicy oak. It’s a little flinty and moreish, too. The palate is contained, tight and precise, even if layered ever so lightly with some nutty, savoury lees and plenty of brisk acidity, which is highly refreshing and uplifting. Decant, allowing lots of air to bring this together.

This is a beautiful chardonnay. It’s highly textural, and flavoursome, and charismatic, and yet it’s all energy and drive too. Honey, cream, white peach, white flowers, mango skin, custard powder and nectarine flavours put on a show that is both fleshy and flamboyant. It’s long through the finish and meticulous at every turn, and yet throughout there’s just so much going on. Wonderful wine.

Lacked flavour and not well balanced in my view. May get better with age

Chardonnay, the greatest white wine in the world.

Tasting Notes

This richer fuller bodied style of chardonnay is well paired with Roast Chicken or creamy pasta dishes.

Food & Serving Suggestions

This style of chardonnay lends itself to classic pairings. Oysters perhaps being the most obvious one but any light seafood would pair perfectly with this wine.

Vineyard Information

Nestled in the Maragle Valley, just 50 km north of Mount Kosciuszko and near the Victorian border, this vineyard is unlike any other in Tumbarumba. Sitting at 500m above sea level, it lies unusually low for the region — but its proximity to the Snowy Mountains creates a remarkable diurnal range: warm days followed by sharp, cooling nights as cold mountain air rushes in at sunset.

This unique microclimate — shared by only one other vineyard — produces strikingly full flavour at lower sugar levels, which is exactly what drew us to this site years ago. And in 2024, it delivered something special.

Winemaking

The fruit was hand picked and lightly pressed to French oak puncheons (500 L) and amphoras. The wine then matured in oak and amphoras for 14 months on gross lees prior to bottling.

Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer is one of NSW's most decorated winemakers. Over the span of more than two decades, he has become perhaps the state's most outspoken advocate for the potential of the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular, Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

Nick's wines exemplify balance, style, immense drinkability and exceptional value for money. As his label has expanded, his winemaking has become more adventurous, now incorporating the use of amphora, sulphur-free bottlings and a more stripped-back winemaking style to highlight the quality of the fruit that these lesser-known NSW regions can produce.

He is one of the most important producers in NSW today and is the touchstone of quality for the state.
