Description

Mount Mary's Triolet is about as close as Australia gets to great white Graves, and the 2024 has just picked up a perfect 100 points from James Suckling. Dr John Middleton first made it in 1987, and under his grandson Sam Middleton it remains one of the most revered white wines in the country.

It's a blend of 65% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Semillon and 10% Muscadelle, all from the estate vineyard in the Yarra Valley. Each variety is picked when it's ready (the Sauvignon once the green herbaceous notes have gone, the Semillon before the acid gets harsh, the Muscadelle at its most flavoursome) then fermented separately in barrel, mostly older oak. Firm pressing, lees stirring and around 11 months in barrel give it texture and depth rather than obvious oak.

The 2024 is bright and tightly focused, with lemon pith, white flowers, grilled citrus and a stony, slightly flinty edge. There's real weight and grip through the middle, but the acidity keeps it fresh and the finish just keeps going. Lovely now with roast chicken, a piece of grilled fish or crab, though it'll reward a decade or more in the cellar.

A perfect score from James Suckling, Halliday Wine of the Year for 2026 - a long track record and a style nobody else in Australia does quite as well. This is Triolet in top form and will go down as one of the most legendary vintages of this wine ever.

"This is superb and most surely a long-term proposition... The flavor through the long finish is enduring and persistent, illustrating the high-class nature of this wine."

100 points - "Such an exciting white Bordeaux blend, balancing freshness and power while hinting at the future. Compact yet expressive with white orchard fruit, grilled lemons, wet stones, lanolin, honeysuckle, citrus oil, blossoms and flinty reduction. The palate is textural and refined with long, mouthwatering acidity, mineral tension and a slight phenolic grip adding structure. Undoubtedly one of the finest New World examples of this style. 65% sauvignon blanc, 25% semillon and 10% muscadelle. Drink or hold. Screw cap." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

99 points - "Barrel fermented and matured in barriques and puncheons, 20% new. A very bright green gold. Aromas of lemon pith and orange blossom that sit alongside subtle marine scents and a little almond kernel. Very bright in the mouth, with texture, weight and freshness in equal measure. The finish really does go on. A wine with a great track record that can be enjoyed now or cellared for a decade or more." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "The 2024 Triolet leads with notes of sweet pea and white flowers, chalk, pressed linen and crushed shells. It is all white and green in character. The palate shows piercing acidity and textural phenolics, with a concentrated core of flavor that spools out over the long finish. This is superb and most surely a long-term proposition. All the elements feel embedded in the whole here: old-oak maturation, each variety and any whole-bunch components—seamless. The flavor through the long finish is enduring and persistent, illustrating the high-class nature of this wine." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "60% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Semillon, 10% Muscadelle. I know there’s something of a bun rush for Mount Mary Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, yet I think it’s the Bordeaux varieties that really shine at this estate, which is not, I hasten to add, a criticism of the quality of the Burgundy varieties, more just a general comment on certain consumer preferences and mores. My initial comment runs along the lines of you don’t see too many SBS blends in this country that offer such calmness and balance as Triolet. Yes, there’s some varietal green capsicum along with flickers of green herb and fennel, and a smoky flinty note, but they’re amalgamated into the general smoothness of the wine, and add a little piquant touch rather than dominate. Almond and violet, gooseberry, guava and lime, a sappy and juicy feel to it, gentle vanilla creaminess, a quiet flinty grip, with a pink grapefruit tang on a finish of excellent length. This is a very classy wine. All just so." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

The Triolet blend, first produced at Mount Mary in 1987, was inspired by the white wines of Graves, Bordeaux. The vineyard is planted to 75% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon and 5% Muscadelle. Each variety is picked at optimum ripeness, and is fermented separately. The characteristics of optimum ripeness are different for each variety. We pick the Sauvignon blanc after the strong herbaceous flavours have disappeared, the Semillon when the acid is not too harsh, and the Muscadelle when the flavour intensity peaks. In the winery we use mostly older barrels for this wine, with the entire production being barrel fermented. Relatively hard pressing is employed to give the wine texture and lees stirring is carried out to add complexity and body. The Triolet is typically barrel aged for 11 months by which time the overt fruity flavours have diminished, and complex aromas are beginning to develop.

Mount Mary

One of the great Australian domains is in the form of its life with young Sam Middleton as head winemaker.

The list of accolades for the great Mount Mary is long and rich. They are one of the country's most celebrated and collectable family-owned estates. From the impossible balance of the iconic Quintet and Triolet blends to the scintillating Chardonnays and the rare and almost mythical Pinot Noir, there is not a hair out of place in the Mount Mary lineup.

With Sam Middleton in charge of the winemaking process, Mount Mary is entering its second golden age as one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
