Description

Few Australian reds carry the authority of Mount Mary Quintet. Dr John Middleton planted this Lilydale vineyard in 1971 to the five Bordeaux varieties side by side, and grandson Sam Middleton now makes a wine that's become the country's benchmark for elegant, long-lived Cabernet blends.

The family rates the 2024 as one of the most impressive and expressive Quintets of recent years, sitting stylistically somewhere between the 2022 and 2023. A dry November set up good flowering and slightly bigger crops. A warm, dry February and March then pushed ripening along, so picking became a careful balancing act between sugar, acid and tannin ripeness.

Cabernet Franc didn't quite get there this year, so it's just 5% of the blend, one of the lowest shares the wine has ever seen. Merlot steps up at 42% alongside 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Malbec and a dash of Petit Verdot. Sam reckons the wine is stronger for it.

It's darker-fruited than usual - blackcurrant, plum, cherry and licorice with a cedary spice - but brighter red fruit keeps it fresh. The real story is the tannin: ultra-fine, everywhere and never obvious, with a lovely line of acidity carrying it long. Decant it now for a roast leg of lamb, or better still, tuck a few away for the next couple of decades.

A darker, more powerful Quintet that hasn't lost an ounce of its trademark finesse. One of the great Australian reds, and a vintage to buy in depth.

"It's a fine art to get so much structure and shape into the wine without it being obvious... This is a beautiful wine, as usual."
- Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

99 points - "Dark-fruited, showing red and black currants, cherries, tobacco leaves, licorice root, cedar and graphite with an earthy, stony complexity. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with integrated, silky yet firm tannins and bright acidity, finishing long and spicy. A finely constructed blend of 50% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 15% cabernet franc, 5% malbec and 5% petit verdot, showing lovely harmony with years ahead in the cellar. Drink or hold." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

98 points - "47/28/15/6/4% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc/petit verdot/malbec. A medium, very bright purple. With aromas of pure blackcurrant, crushed violets, pencil-box shavings and graphite, this soars effortlessly from the glass. Medium to full bodied, this has an intensity on the palate that's in perfect harmony with the wine's firm yet svelte, long-chained tannins. Another superb Quintet destined to cellar well for over the next 10–20 years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

97 points - "The 2024 Quintet is perfumed and so balanced, leading with notes of cassis, sweet tobacco, dusted licorice, raspberry seed, rose petals and sandalwood. The palate is ultra-fine, and the tannins are everywhere and not at all obvious. It's a fine art to get so much structure and shape into the wine without it being obvious. The wine is brambly, leafy and a little minty; and having said everything else about the ripeness of fruit and tannin, it is this character more than anything that lends itself to the very long haul ahead. This is a beautiful wine, as usual. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork." - Erin Larkin (The Wine Advocate)

96 points - "46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot,5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot. This is a most versatile and agile wine, it would go with anything from beef wellington to sizzling beef. One of those wines where its lightness and freshness is a compelling point of difference. Anyway, here we are. Blackcurrant, fresh blackberry, raspberry, pencil shavings, violet and dried roses, a little roast red capsicum, along with some vanilla cream. It’s medium-bodied, a lively carriage of acidity, a fine dusting of grainy tannin, with a gently sappy finish of outstanding length. This is Yarra Cabernet in full flight, and such a delicious and engaging wine. Vivacious and so charming. Yes." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Winemaker's Note
The 2024, we believe, is one of the most impressive and expressive Quintets we have made in recent years. Stylistically, it sits somewhere between the 2022 and 2023. The nose opens with darker fruits, namely blackcurrant, plums, cherry, licorice and cedar wood spice nuances. The palate again expresses a darker fruit profile, intertwined with some lighter, brighter red fruit characteristics adding freshness and complexity. Although there is still interest and intrigue here at such a young age, this wine has much still to unfurl and reveal over the coming years. The tannin profile is often a hallmark of the great Quintet vintages, and 2024 is no exception. An ultra-fine-grained tannin profile, combined with a refreshing acid line, runs seamlessly through the palate, adding focus, drawing out the finish and providing decades of ageing potential in the cellar.

Vintage
The weather in November 2023 was relatively dry, allowing for a fairly uninterrupted flowering and fruit set period. Thanks to these favourable conditions, crop levels were pleasingly a little higher than in the previous three years. October and January were particularly wet, while November and December provided some ideal growing conditions, with relatively warm, dry weather. February and March are arguably the most important months of the growing season from a wine quality and stylistic point of view, and in '24, warm and dry weather prevailed through both, accelerating sugar accumulation. Picking decisions became a balancing act between sugar levels, acid degradation and adequate phenolic ripeness.

In 2024, we struggled to ripen the Cabernet franc to ideal ripeness levels, so the 2024 Quintet has one of the lowest Cabernet franc percentages we have seen in a Quintet, at 5%. We have no doubt this has resulted in a far stronger wine than would have been the case with our more common 15 to 17% Cabernet franc.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
