Few names carry as much weight in the Yarra Valley as Mount Mary. Dr John Middleton planted the vineyard at Lilydale in 1971, well before the region's revival took hold, and the estate has built its reputation on fine, understated wines that age beautifully. Today his grandson Sam Middleton runs the show, and the house style hasn't budged: elegance first, always.

The 2024 Pinot Noir was destemmed and fermented with as many whole berries kept intact as possible, then spent 15 months in French barriques, 25% of them new. It wasn't the easiest season, but you'd never guess it from the glass. If anything, it's a reminder of how well this vineyard handles a tricky year.

Expect red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a little warm spice, with savoury, earthy notes filling things out as it opens up. Medium-bodied and silky, with superfine tannins and bright acidity carrying it to a really long finish. Lovely now, but it'll gain plenty of complexity over the next six to ten years.

Pour it with roast duck, a mushroom risotto or a simple roast chook. A classic, polished Yarra Pinot from one of Australia's most storied estates, and 97 points from Halliday to back it up.

"The tannins are superfine and, as delicious as this is now, it will only become even more complex over the next six to 10 years."
- Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

"A refined release from a more challenging vintage, yet extremely polished...Delicate and finely constructed, with nuance and aging potential, although it's enticing now."
- Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

"it sits so high in the mouth, power without weight...There's a firm architectural feel through a very long finish, with a good vein of tannin driving to brilliant length."
- Tom Kline (Inside Burgundy)

97 points - "Destemmed and fermented with as many whole berries as possible. 15 months in French barriques (25% new). A medium, bright crimson. A gorgeous bouquet of red cherry, black raspberry, dark rose and allspice. This follows through onto the medium-bodied, silkily textured, fragrant and very long palate. The tannins are superfine and, as delicious as this is now, it will only become even more complex over the next six to 10 years." - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

96 points - "A refined release from a more challenging vintage, yet extremely polished. High-toned red cherries, cranberries, rose petals and rhubarb with Asian spices, citrus peel and earth. The plush, midweight palate offers fine-grained tannins, bright acidity and a refreshing mineral-edged finish. Delicate and finely constructed, with nuance and aging potential, although it's enticing now. Drink or hold." - Ryan Montgomery (James Suckling)

95 points - "This has some pop to it from the get-go, with mashed strawberry and its white pepper spice, lifted raspberry, before some complexing savoury tones enter the mix to fill it out. Balsamic, clove, twigs, allusions of quince paste, woody spice, some touches of rhubarb. The palate has a lift to it — it sits so high in the mouth, power without weight. Woody spice, dark cherry, mashed strawberry, raspberry leaf tea, a touch of rhubarb again. The fruit builds in the glass with time. There's a firm architectural feel through a very long finish, with a good vein of tannin driving to brilliant length." - Tom Kline (Inside Burgundy)

94 points - "My partner censored my introduction to this wine, though I thought it was pretty funny. I read it out to her, and she said ‘You can’t say that’, well checks and balances and all that! This is a more hearty sort of Pinot Noir. Poached strawberry, red cherry, rhubarb, roses, a bit of five spice, with something of an earthy autumnal cast. It’s medium-bodied, has a bit of chew and orange peel amaro character, a fine grainy feel to tannin, with a nutty and spicy finish of good length. Kind of stoic in presentation, but a good wine all up. It will age well, and surely, like all MM Pinots, though it’s maybe not one of the best releases of this wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Winemaker's Note
This year's '24 Pinot is lighter in weight and colour than the exceptional 2023, but has its own very distinctive character and charm. The nose offers delicate notes of strawberry, rhubarb, quince paste and a hint of cherry, with a reductive quality that adds intrigue on return to the glass. On the palate, the wine is fresh and elegant, with an impressive mouthfeel and intensity of flavour for a wine that is a little lighter than what we would generally expect from Mount Mary Pinot noir. The flavour profile shows slightly darker fruit characters than the nose suggests. Plum, red fruit and a touch of umami dance with the drier, more savoury complexities often seen in Mount Mary Pinot, contributing so much to the detail and complexity of this wine. The hallmark Mount Mary tannin structure is present, lending shape and supporting the wine's food-friendly nature.
Sam Middleton, Mount Mary Winemaker

Vintage
The weather in November 2023 was relatively dry, allowing for a fairly uninterrupted flowering and fruit set period. Thanks to these favourable conditions, crop levels were pleasingly a little higher than in the previous three years. October and January were particularly wet, while November and December provided some ideal growing conditions, with relatively warm, dry weather. February and March are arguably the most important months of the growing season from a wine quality and stylistic point of view, and in '24, warm and dry weather prevailed through both, accelerating sugar accumulation. Picking decisions became a balancing act between sugar levels, acid degradation and adequate phenolic ripeness.

Mount Mary

One of the great Australian domains is in the form of its life with young Sam Middleton as head winemaker.

The list of accolades for the great Mount Mary is long and rich. They are one of the country's most celebrated and collectable family-owned estates. From the impossible balance of the iconic Quintet and Triolet blends to the scintillating Chardonnays and the rare and almost mythical Pinot Noir, there is not a hair out of place in the Mount Mary lineup.

With Sam Middleton in charge of the winemaking process, Mount Mary is entering its second golden age as one of the jewels of the Yarra Valley.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
