Description

Mount Majura has long been a quiet overachiever in the Canberra District, and their Riesling is arguably where they offer the most value. Sourced from the "Pines" block - the coolest, south-easterly corner of the estate - and steeper eastern slopes, this is a site-specific wine that consistently leans into a citrus and floral profile rather than the riper stone fruit found elsewhere in the region.

The 2024 season was a return to form for Canberra after a cold/wet 2023, with a warm, dry spring followed by a mild summer that preserved the "zesty" acidity the district is famous for.

New winemaker Jeremy Nascimben has nailed his first crack at this wine. The fruit was hand-picked and only the lightly pressed free-run juice was used to keep the palate clean. He stopped the fermentation with about 6g/l of residual sugar - just enough to buffer the high natural acidity without making the wine taste sweet.

It’s a classic, high-def Riesling. It’s vibrant, fresh, and exactly what Canberra Riesling should be.

“This is Jeremy Nascimben’s first vintage since taking over the winemaking reins at Mount Majura. He’s a great guy with an excellent palate and highly skilled. No wonder this is a gorgeous wine... It’s pristine, refreshing and a glorious drink.”

“A fine and delicate young riesling which has underlying complexity and seems to promise even more in future. A wine of true finesse”

96 points - “This is Jeremy Nascimben’s first vintage since taking over the winemaking reins at Mount Majura. He’s a great guy with an excellent palate and highly skilled. No wonder this is a gorgeous wine. Starts out with a whisper of lemon blossom, bath salts, grapefruit pith and a hint of aniseed. The palate is super refined, with juicy acidity. It feels invigorating yet there’s a slip of texture, too. It’s pristine, refreshing and a glorious drink.” - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

95 points - “Gently nutty smoky overtones to a citrusy aroma, hints of tealeaf, nettle, passionfruit and oyster brine too. The wine is delicate and refined, light bodied and fresh, with understatement and subtlety. A fine and delicate young riesling which has underlying complexity and seems to promise even more in future. A wine of true finesse” - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Great example of Canberra District Riesling

This is a great example of Canberra District Riesling, up there with the best (e.g. Clonakilla, Ravensworth) in the region. This is a dry, minerally style with great persistence. Great value for money.

RIESLING

Our original planting of Riesling in the Pines block, the coolest, most south-easterly aspect of our site, has now been supplemented with Riesling grafted onto vines of similar age in the North block, a little steeper and more east-facing. After twenty vintages, we recognize the typical characters that our site produces: white blossom aromatics and citrus characters leaning more towards lemon peel and grapefruit, and often a hint of aniseed.

2024 VINTAGE

Thankfully the 2024 growing season saw a welcome return to dryer than usual (El Niño) growing conditions towards the halfway point of the season leading to a relatively warm and dry spring. Summer rainfall and temperatures were mild to average, allowing sufficient ripeness to be achieved in all varieties. The 2024 whites show lovely brightness, freshness and purity with typical zesty acidity while the reds are dense in colour, with lifted fresh aromatics and fine ripe tannins, a classic Canberra District season overall.

WINEMAKER

Originally from Griffith, NSW, the whole winery scene was a large part of growing up for Jeremy. He spent countless hours on weekends and after school at the winery with his winery engineer father. It was no surprise then that Jeremy quickly realised a passion for all things winemaking. Jeremy completed a double degree in Winemaking and Viticulture at Charles Sturt University Wagga Wagga, and soon thereafter, travelled the world undertaking vintages in New Zealand, Canada, Germany and France. Jeremy is also an avid wine show judge, with over 10 years of wine show judging experience under his belt.

WINEMAKING

Hand-picked between the 22nd February and 13th March at an average of 11.1 Baumé. The fruit was chilled to 5’C overnight before processing. Only lightly pressed free-run juice was taken at approximately 575 L/Tonne, clarified by flotation and fermented cool before ceasing fermentation at 6g/l residual sugar for balance. Bottled under screwcap July 2024, 445 dozen made (plus 38 magnums). Alcohol 11.5% by volume. Vegan friendly?: No (fined with gelatin and casein).

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
