Description

Before he made wine, Michael Hall valued jewellery, and 'Sang de Pigeon' (pigeon's blood) is the trade's name for the finest rubies, mostly from Myanmar's Mogok Stone Tract. Here it's his tag for a very small parcel of Barossa Shiraz which he makes into a ready-to-drink style.

It was a dry year in 2024, with low winter rain and a dry spring and summer broken by a welcome soaking in early January. After an early budburst the season slowed down to an even, regular ripening. Michael hand-picked the fruit and kept 55% as whole bunches, which is a big jump on the 2022. It was wild fermented, then given 15 months in French oak barrels (29% new).

All that whole bunch shows up as a savoury, meaty edge over blackberry, plum and black cherry, with a dusting of spice, cocoa and graphite. It's dense but not fleshy, with fine tannins and a fresh finish. This is a classy, small-batch Barossa Shiraz and one of our strongest recommeds in this price bracket.

"Purely fruited with thick, powdery tannins and plenty of energy, this is just a great, solidly-priced contemporary Barossa shiraz."

"There’s a lovely savory, meaty edge... The palate shows good fruit density without any fleshiness, with fine tannins and acidity, a mineral edge and a tense finish."

Plush, graphite-dusted damson plum, black cherry and blueberry fruits with hints of baking spices, bay leaf, panforte, licorice, pan juices, dark chocolate, fruitcake and earth. Purely fruited with thick, powdery tannins and plenty of energy, this is just a great, solidly-priced contemporary Barossa shiraz." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

Customer Reviews

Sang de Pigeon (pigeon’s blood) is a nod to my former life as a jewellery valuer. It’s the trade term for the finest rubies, invariably from the Mogok Stone Tract in Myanmar. The precious grapes for this wine were grown far to the south-east, in South Australia’s Barossa.

For wine nerds like me: Low winter rains preceded a dry spring and summer, interrupted by welcome rain in early January. After early budburst the season slowed to regular ripening. Hand-picked, 45% destemmed, 55% whole bunch, wild fermented, pressed to French oak, matured for 15 months in French oak barrels (29% new).

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
