Description

Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson have spent years turning their small Porepunkah vineyard into the premier address for Alpine Valleys Tempranillo. They treat the variety with serious respect, dividing the harvest into ten small batches across five different clones to capture every bit of nuance the site offers. The 2024 vintage gave them near-perfect conditions - warm days and crisp nights that allowed the fruit to ripen evenly and build phenomenal structure.

In the cellar, Eleana handles each parcel individually, utilising cold soaks, natural ferments, and various levels of whole bunch and extended skin contact. After basket pressing, the wine spent 11 months in French oak with the malolactic lees left intact to build texture.

We reckon this is the finest Mayford Tempranillo release to date. It is deeply fragrant, packed with black cherry, star anise, brambly rose, and musk, alongside darker, savoury lines of cola, fresh leather, and charred meats. The palate carries real substance and depth, wrapped in a glove of fine, velvety tannins that provide great drive on the finish.

"Eleana Anderson is one freakishly fantastic winegrower and maker, showing the way with, and the exciting future of, tempranillo in Australia. Few come close... a liveliness of spiciness and cacao wrapped in a savoury edginess and warm vanillin oak. An absolute cracker."

"Mayford Tempranillo always has flavour and composure but it’s the structure that always seduces me. It wouldn’t be hard to call this release perfect. Certainly the integration of the various components is elite... It’s joyously good, basically. It will age magnificently. And the tannin here checks out beautifully."

97 points - "Hand picked over three weeks, 12 micro ferments, all five clones, parcels fermented and matured individually, 12 months' maturation in French barrique (25% new), basket pressed. Eleana Anderson is one freakishly fantastic winegrower and maker, showing the way with, and the exciting future of, tempranillo in Australia. Few come close. A scent alive in rose florals, red licorice, bay leaf, earth and black and red fruits, with a depth of dried herbs, lures you in. You stay for the complexity that unfolds slowly and lingeringly, combining deep layers of flavour with a liveliness of spiciness and cacao wrapped in a savoury edginess and warm vanillin oak. An absolute cracker." - Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)

95+ points - "Mayford Tempranillo always has flavour and composure but it’s the structure that always seduces me.

It wouldn’t be hard to call this release perfect. Certainly the integration of the various components is elite. It’s pure of fruit, polished, comes awash with dry, fine, sandy tannin and pushes long through the finish. The 2023 release is a belter; this is an excellent follow-up. It tastes of dark berries, minted vanilla, floral and herb notes, chicory and a bright berried note that I couldn’t quite nail. It’s joyously good, basically. It will age magnificently. And the tannin here checks out beautifully." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Customer Reviews

Perhaps the finest Mayford Tempranillo release to date, a perfectly poised wine from a stellar vintage. This wine has it all, substance, allure, depth and unaffected elegance. Svelte, well-coiffed and chockfull of potential.

The 2024 harvest was near perfect with a sustained period of warm (but not hot) days and cool nights. Slow, uniform ripening conditions have produced wines with optimal maturity, beautiful structure and phenomenal aging potential. Deeply fragrant with cinnamon, star anise, black cherry, loganberry, brambly roses and musk, the list goes on and on. Dark notes too of cola, coffee liqueur, charry charcuterie and fresh leather. This is a wine of balance, finessed, layered and complex that builds and delivers in the glass and is wrapped in a glove of fine, velvety tannins.

Tempranillo was hand-picked in ten small parcels over the last 14 days of March. Each separate batch was chilled and cold soaked prior to natural ferment in open pots with extensive hand plunging. Some batches had a percentage of stalk and whole bunch inclusion and others, extended post ferment-maceration. Ten ferments, five clones.

Each wine was then basket pressed before being put to barrel for maturation in French barriques (25% new) for eleven months, retaining malo lees for texture and complexity before blending and filtration.

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

No, all prices are set at the full discounted dozen rate already.

Most wine retailers list at a single-bottle price and then discount 10–15% when you buy six or twelve. We've taken the opposite approach. Since the overwhelming majority of our orders are already 6 bottles or more, our list price is set for the case buyer from the start. There's no inflated single-bottle price to discount down from.

What that means for you:

- One price, same for everyone — no minimum to hit to unlock the best rate
- No mixed-six gymnastics to qualify for a discount
- Our single-bottle price is typically at or below a traditional retailer's by-the-dozen rate

Put simply: the box discount is already baked into the price.

**And if you find it cheaper elsewhere?** Let us know. If the same wine is available at a lower price at another retailer (including at their mixed-six or by-the-dozen rate) we're happy to match it.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
